Custom frames can be really expensive, so we're always looking for new, inexpensive ways to hang our expanding collection of art. We love this idea that uses salvaged picture frames and binder clips to easily hang and rotate art.
Early Macbook Air buyers were the first to receive a read-only USB restore drive, rather than a traditional DVD. With the release of Lion, those USB drives have now become somewhat obsolete (especially if you’ve already upgraded to Lion). While Apple does have a Lion USB disk for sale, it costs a whopping $69. We’ll show you how to unlock that Snow Leopard restore drive and upgrade it to Lion, after the jump.
We're still trying to think of a stylus emergency. Maybe if you lost all of your fingertips in a horrific factory accident? And you're the only one around? And your only means of communication is a capacitive touchscreen device? Whatever. The point is that one of you might need to MacGyver yourself a touch-screen pen stylus sometime in the near future. Here's how you do it.
Re-Nest reader Rayan (and the mind behind the blog The Design Confidential) sent us her new creative reuse project: turning old apothecary jars into terrariums! Here's what she says: "Behold, my collection of apothecary jars. I have about 7 of these things in various sizes, and quite frankly I am a bit tired of finding ways to fill them with each coming season or holiday. Enter brilliant idea for a succulent terrarium collection..."
We don't know who first came up with the idea to use IKEA kitchen wall cabinets for a floating credenza, but the trend is certainly growing. Coined by Anna of Door Sixteen, the "fauxdenza" is a clever solution for small spaces, often providing ample storage for a fraction of what a real credenza would cost. Need a DIY project for the holiday weekend? Here are ten examples to get you motivated!
Big props to reader Becca who came up with a clever solution (requiring only "middle school sewing skills") for keeping her early roller son safe and comfy. She shares: My son started rolling just before I was to return to work and he was to start daycare. (As a pediatric therapist I might have helped this along, but I like to think he was just advanced.) The problem was he leads with his head. I did not want our little bean banging his bean on the industrial carpet floor all day.
What do you do with empty tissue box holders? What?!? You haven't thought of a project for empty tissue box holders? *Sigh*. Do we have to do everything for you? Thankfully, we didn't do anything this time. Christine over at Call of the Small has created an easy DIY dollhouse entirely from 3 tissue box covers.
Philips Ambilight has always been the holy grail of ambient lighting for the home theater. Ambilight illuminates the back of your HDTV, producing an ambient glow to reduce eyestrain. Some of the Lamplight-compatible HDTV sets come with 250 LEDs, which will match the overall color and tone to further reduce visual strain while watching TV in dim or dark rooms. So why not duplicate the same idea for your computer monitor setup?
I love when small, inexpensive changes can create a big impact. Not every project out there has to be so huge and daunting to make a difference. That's what I love about these simple little DIY painting updates that could help give some generic accessories a whole new persona.
