Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Dexel Crafted's gorgeous wood pieces stood out to me at ICFF 2010. Designer Kurt Dexel answered some questions about his designs and lifework including this gem of advice: "When I first went out on my own someone said 'Do what you love and the money will follow'…Do not listen to these people — they are crazy. You will have to do some things you hate as well." More
This weekend's Sunset Magazine 13th Annual Celebration Weekend, billed as "The West On-The-Go," should prove to be yet another exciting event. As it opens its Menlo Park Campus to the public, Sunset Magazine will host a bevy of activities ranging from a glam camping exhibit, cooking stages, a food pavilion, a home and garden stage and wine seminars to everyone's favorite &mdash Secondhand Sunset, a shop full of items from Sunset's own prop library, studio and Idea Houses. ICFF came to a big finish last Tuesday and our coverage was bigger than ever. With eight bloggers trawling the aisles we sifted through it all in order to give you a real taste of what was going on as well as highlighting all the new good stuff. In 2010-11 we're going to be totally amping up our show coverage, so tune in here if you ever want to know what's going on. And here are my last little favorite tidbits.
The Jonathan Adler booth at ICFF always feels like a little bit of an oasis of maximalist fun in the middle of the show floor. Not that the other booths aren't also fun, but the styling of the booth is such a happy jumble of color and texture and furniture and lighting and tchotchkes - it feels like you've stumbled upon something very different in the sea of sparsely decorated trade show stalls. Wrapping up our week long coverage of the ICFF 2010 show, we've gathered a hodge podge of the rest of our favourite things we saw and photographed during our stay in NYC amongst the throngs of designers, retailers, design press and reps. It was an amazing time meeting many of the folks we communicate with via email and IM (including one of our own team, Joelle, whom we met for the first time) and an opportunity to see many designs we've only admired online and in print. Lately a lot of what has caught our eye are products that are combine the elements of craft with contemporary design. That is the objective of Love Freedom Flow, a collective of companies, producers and communities in the Caribbean which are aiming to develop new products based on traditional techniques and made from indigenous materials, many of which are made in the "One Product, One Village" or by artisans out of their home.
