Name: Dan Horton, audio engineer & Sarah Prowse, kinesiologist Location: Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada Size: 7 bedrooms, 5,000 square feet Years lived in: 4 months; owned
When kinesiologist Sarah Prowse and audio engineer Dan Horton were ready to take the leap from their rented loft to purchasing their first house together, they discovered that affordable homes in good condition are few and far between in Toronto’s hot real estate market. The quest for ample space in a good location kept them exploring the messy frontier of city real estate to no avail, as they found themselves struggling to justify the asking prices of the fixer-uppers that fell within their budget but not their aspirations. That’s when a phone call from Dan’s sister changed everything.

We're BACK! Thanks so much for the nice comments about our little muffin. You guys are the best. It might seem like we only took a week off, but that's not really the case. Want to know how long it took us to finish up all the details?
12 weeks. Yep. Having a baby seriously slowed us down!
Name: Suzannah Hamlin Stanley & Jason Stanley Location: Beaverton, Oregon Size: 1,525 square feet Years lived in: Less than 1.5 years; Owned
The homes of avid Do-It-Yourselfers have a charm and artistry all their own; they are often places that represent their owners more clearly than any space filled with off-the-shelf pieces. Such is the case for Suzanna Hamlin Stanley and Jason Stanley, who just a year and a half ago moved into their brand new townhouse just outside of Portland, Oregon, and started building a home together to perfectly suit their style and needs.
I would call my style heritage-contemporary as I love mixing old and new. I have to have lots of colour in my home as it makes me happy. I don't stick to any design ethic, I just trust my eye to create a well designed livable space - I have three kids so white everything wouldn't work!
Name: Matt Leyes, owner and esthetician for The Men's Grooming Parlor Location: Andersonville; Chicago, Illinois Years lived in: 5 years
Matt knew there were men out there who wanted professional grooming services, but didn’t want to end up in a pink robe sitting next to five women in a typical salon waiting room. These men wanted a place just for them, a hidden place right in the middle of the city where they could feel at home in a darkly-paneled sanctuary, surrounded by worn and traveled objects of curiosity. But where could he find a storefront that would give just the right mix of visibility and discretion?

This week was all about the floors. My contractor, Gregg, came back early in the week to finish patching the kitchen floor. I think he ended up putting a lot more work into the floor than he had originally expected – flipping damaged floorboards, pulling out extraneous nails, transferring floorboards from one part of the kitchen to another – but he did a really nice job. Attention to detail definitely paid off in this case.
