My Tech Top 10: Jaime Derringer and Caroline Williamson of Design Milk
More
Design Milk, a longtime favorite site of mine, describes itself as "always fresh + never sour", and I can't disagree. Their fortified daily feed spans from the world of art to design to architecture and beyond all with a modernist's sensibility (but I think as an animal lover, I may enjoy their pet site, Dog Milk, a whisker more). Founder Jaime Derringer and associate editor Caroline Williamson were kind enough to share their daily tech tool favorites all within arm's reach of their desk, splitting our usual My Tech Top in half...
MoreIt was an internet lifetime ago when Apartment Therapy was nominated in the "Best Lifestyle Website" category for a Webby Award, but we can still remember the thrill and honor of being recognized. We continue to follow nominations in all categories each year (17 years of awards!), and so we're thrilled today to take a peek behind the curtain and spotlight Tiffany Shlain, the founder of the Webby Awards with her My Tech Top 10...
If I were to sum up 2012 for myself I'd say it's the beginning of piecing together my personal workspace. For the longest time I've researched and looked at desktop after desktop (which was how I initially found Unplggd now called Apartment Therapy's Tech site.) Along the way I've gathered pictures and notes into a digital scrapbook for inspiration in my goal to put together a workspace that works for me. It's still a work in progress, however I am proud with where it's at today and see potential for growth in the upcoming new year.
After three years with Apartment Therapy Tech I've had the opportunity to use a wide variety of devices and have fallen in love with quite a few as evidenced by the photo above. 2012 has been a big year filled with global travel (9+ countries, 12+ cities), getting back into shape, as well as consulting on some great projects, and my Tech Top Ten is all about the technology that has helped make all that happen (or at least make it more pleasant)...
Many things changed for me in 2012: I've become tech bilingual, continued working with Apple devices, while still firmly using PC at home. I've become smarter about upgrading tech, ensuring the upgrade cycle doesn't cost too much, while continuing to optimize my daily workflow so that I'm more productive each day...
Throughout this year I've added several new items to my collection of tech that I use on a daily basis. My iPhone and iPad have become even more useful to me this year because of all the apps I use to get things done - paying bills, listening to music and taking photos. Although still an Apple fan at heart, I did add a couple items that aren't Mac-made. Here's a roundup of the tech I spent the most time with this year.
2012 was the year I finally gave in, (and in a big way) switching ecosystems to Apple and the Mac. For years I was a cut-throat Android fanboy (custom ROM's and rooted devices) and every PC I owned was a custom built power house. In 2012 that all changed, and it has seen me purchase just about every Apple device I could possibly afford...
I have had a good year. I started writing for Apartment Therapy, lost 20 pounds, and became increasingly obsessed with downsizing my belongings. And tech played a significant role in all of these things. It's all about streamlining my physical and online life. From my weight loss app to setting up cloud services, I'm happy to share my very first My Tech Top 10.
It's my second Tech Top 10 for Apartment Therapy and my list sure is different from last year's roundup. 2012 brought a lot more online shopping, streaming content, and home automation technologies integrated into my home life. I said my goodbyes to the old and outdated, and "hello" to new ones...here are the ten I've welcomed into my life.
