If you've ever been to one of Unison's famous warehouse sales, you know that their whitewashed Chicago space is a perfect setting for their designs. This spring, after many requests, husband and wife team Robert Segal and Alicia Rosauer decided to adjust their office space so that they could devote part of their warehouse to a weekend retail shop.
Every year, I'm excited to hit the aisles of the McCormick Center to suss out the hot color story at the Home & Housewares show. Last year, green ruled the roost, in 2010, somewhat surprisingly, it was a very grape-y purple and in 2009, a range of dark, deep autumnal shades were the leading edge. This time around I focused in on just tabletop items and the direction is an interesting one...looks like we're going gray!

Honeyshine, a store to find objects for the home and gifts for people in them, is full of treasures large and small. Their artfully curated showrooms entice visitors to discover treasures for almost any price range.
If you're as obsessed with collecting as I am, you'll be very familiar with the phrases I tell my partner (and myself) to justify the oh so frequently arriving packages: "it was too good a price to pass up," "these aren't made anymore," "I've been looking for this one forever,"... But what I love about this collection is that they not only display beautifully but are usable, dishwasher-safe and most pieces are affordable! Now who can argue with that?
Perhaps inspired by the glitz of the New Year or the sequins littering last season's runway, but the color gold is everywhere. Less is more when it comes to metallics, but a pop of sparkle brings life into any space, and I'm completely enamored.
I'll admit it; I used to be the guy that showed up to holiday parties bearing a bottle of vino frantically grabbed from the corner store — often with the price tag still stuck on — and stuffed into a shiny mylar bag. But not this year!
Some occasions call for a very special gift, and if you are planning on spending a bit more, you may as well spend well. Here we have rounded up the best eco-friendly, healthy, gifts all under $500. Some, like the cast iron tea pot or the handmade soap stone stock pot will last a lifetime and encourage the recipient to prepare meals at home. A membership to a CSA is a fantastic way to support local farmers and give the gift of fresh produce or flowers. Spending upwards of $500 on a holiday gift might not be possible for everyone, but for those who are able, spending wisely can encourage a healthy eco lifestyle for the recipient and support good causes.
The word "minimalist" usually conjures up images of sleek "no fuss" modern rooms with sharp angles and minimal adornment. But a minimalist dining room could also be one that simply lacks many of the case pieces that were once staples in the traditional dining room set: the sideboard and/or buffet and some kind of china cabinet or hutch. A minimalist dining room may simply contain a table and chairs and maybe a simple shelf to show of a handful of vases or decorative accessories.
Much as I love Bono and his philanthropic band of (RED)-clad merry men, the idea of buying most (RED) products as a way to give money to Africa just never worked for me. I would rather buy a t-shirt I actually like and write a check to Mercy Corps. But while flipping through UK's Elle Decoration this month, I discovered Bib&Sola's glass carafe and tumblers. The products boldly accomplish what even the writer of "Mysterious Ways" could not: they combine charitable purchase power with gorgeous design.
We've got a weak spot for beautiful handmade ceramics and pottery. They catch our eye with beautiful materials, glazes, colors and textures, and we love that every artist has their own style, whether it be modern, traditional or eclectic. A high-quality piece can be not only functional and decorative, but also a cherished heirloom. The following are some of our favorite artists who produce lovely ceramics that stand the test of time and wow us with new handmade designs.
