MoreWhen your home office is out in the open, you can't just hide the mess behind a closed door at the end of the day. What are you going to do with the pens, notepads, files, etc.? The little-used ironing board closet typical of my Spanish-style apartment seemed ripe for renovation. Other people have fitted them to hold spices, why couldn't I fit mine to hold office supplies?

This is an exciting week because our kitchen countertops got measured on Monday and installed on Friday! We chose Cesaerstone in “Pure White” for the counters along the walls. The stone company (Marble City) was nice enough to rush the job and also give us the material from the sink cutout to use as a pastry board.

We finally have a kitchen! And since we’ve been simultaneously renovating the entire house along with this kitchen/family room project, we’re breathing a big sigh of relief that the house is ready to live in at last!
When Billy and Sally bought this 775 square foot apartment in the Fort Greene area of Brooklyn, it had a few of the less-than-charming features common to many NYC area flats — badly worn floors; a tiny, cramped kitchen, awkwardly separated from the rest of the space. With the power vested in them as new homeowners, they decided to do something about it, embarking on an inspiring renovation that shows just how much living you can do in a small space.

NOW OR NEVER: A FEW INDULGENCES.
It's amazing how it all came together after the counters were installed. We decided to go for the subway tile. In a big way. Imagine that. We not only did the backsplash, but we tiled the entire west wall, floor to ceiling, where the range stands.
