I've been looking into ways to get myself and my stuff across the country, and the two big moving truck rental companies both estimate my rental cost at $1,400, plus approximately $1,000 in gas. I am fairly certain that the value of all my worldly possessions does not equal $2,400...
Over the years I've moved more times than I can count on two hands. Folks, at this point in time, I'm a pro. That said, my current residence only has a 6 month lease and I'm calling it the most ridiculous thing ever. Seriously — ever.
MoreKnowing what you want in a rental apartment is pretty easy: space, location, storage, beautiful floors, light, etc. Finding all of those things within your budget can be a bit more difficult. But before you even start contemplating your rental possibilities, you should probably know what your budget is, and fortunately, this step isn't all that difficult.

I've always contended that the best way to help a new apartment begin to feel like home is to roll up your sleeves and give it a thorough cleaning yourself. In an ideal world, landlords would do more than cash your checks every month. They'd replace shoddy cabinets and stained carpet, let you paint your walls, and make sure all their tenants were respectful and courteous to each other. In reality, renting can be a harrowing experience. Landlords are occasionally nosy, creepy, absentee, or just plain incompetent. Got a great one? You're lucky! More
Q: I'm planning to move from San Francisco to New Haven, Connecticut this summer. Today I had my first quote from a moving company, and they told me that they will not transport plants over state lines, nor will any other moving company. I have become very attached to my plants. I have had some almost 10 years, since my first dorm room in college, and have watched them grow from tiny sprouts. I can't imagine moving without them. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get plants across the country? Driving them myself is not an option because of the short amount of time I have to complete the move.
I've moved across the country three times, and am putting the wheels in motion for a fourth. I know from experience what an exhausting, expensive experience it will probably be, so I need all the motivation I can get. The idea of all my boxes sealed and labelled with fun chartreuse tape is just the inspiration I need… More
Taking the time to choose the right roommate could be the difference between a friend for life that you looking forward to seeing at the end of the day (or someone that keeps their distance and causes no trouble), and horror stories you will tell at dinner parties for years to come.
