Shopping at architectural salvage stores will not only save you money on a renovation, it also helps keep perfectly good household items out of landfills. If you're not interested in rebuilding with secondhand goods, you can also donate yours.
For years, it has seemed that for something to be considered very modern or contemporary, it should be hard-edged. Crisp, sharp angles and straight lines were the norm. This year at Cersaie, while there is still plenty of beautiful, more angular sinks, toilets, bidets and mirrors for the bath to be found, the truly fashion-forward form factor is round, curvy, smooth and circular.
Many people (though not enough) are willing to make considerable lifestyle adjustments to reduce their personal carbon footprint. But ask someone to change his or her showering habits in the name of the environment, and you will likely encounter some resistance. The fact is, there is something almost spiritual about a really good shower. The intensity of the water pressure, the reliable and consistent temperature, the wide coverage of the spray. Any mention of "water-saving" shower heads may conjure up images of standing under an anemic drizzle of lukewarm water.

When you think of German design, you probably think of BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Not bathrooms. That is why this unique shower space is my selection my most extravagant bathroom fantasy.
Some may think the shower's basic design can't be improved upon. There are at least two companies that disagree, marketing extreme conceptual showers that challenge the way we bathe. Would you try them out? See more about the Loop and the Horizontal after the jump.
Likely one of the most-utilized spaces in your home is the bathroom. That's why my dream bathroom has to hold its own in form and function. A nice mix of ingenious hidden technology and elegant furnishings work together to make this space a daily spa-like escape.
When the time comes to remodel a bathroom, most of us are inexperienced novices. We might look at samples, read remodeling blogs and mags, and talk to some storeowners and contractors, hoping everything will come out all right in the end. For us ingénues, the idea of a "bathroom in a box" — where nearly everything is taken care of, from fixture choices to installation — seems appealing.
