Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: The sentimentality of the garden. The antique geranium is from cuttings from my grandmother's house over 10 years ago, and the gardenia was the centerpiece in a 6" pot at my nephew's wedding 5 years ago. There is also the ivy that my mother gave me 4 years ago that nearly died while my brother took care of it and I brought back to life, and the miniature rose that I rescued from a dark shelf at the drug store. I love sitting amongst plants that have meaning to me.

Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: That's a tough one. There are so many favorite things because I consider it such a vital component of my apartment. Having lived without an outdoor space in the past, I know that I cannot ever again live without my own little patch of nature, no matter how tiny it may be. If I had to choose a favorite thing, I guess it would be the flexibility of the space. I can BBQ, read and nap on the bench, pull out the bench and sit around it on the ground during dinner parties (as in one of the photos), have the girls over for wine and cheese, eat cherries right off of the tree that hangs over my deck. It's my little hidden gem.

Sometimes it is hard to believe that I am in the middle of the city. The yard was actually one of the primary reasons for choosing the house in the first place. The small size is one of the yard's best attributes...it means I can really let the plantings be the showcase.

Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: We live out there when the weather cooperates! It adds living space and a gives a sense of openness to our small mid century ranch home. We eat as many meals out there as possible, and guests always gravitate there as well. Sitting out there on a summer's night, listening to the cicadas, is so peaceful and comfortable.
