Last week I put together a dream living room that will probably never come to fruition. It was based entirely around my desire of owning a blue velvet sofa. Since that's out of the question (Curious as to why? Read prior post here), but a new leather couch is in my distant future, I thought this would be a fun exercise to repeat based on that premise. In my ideal living room, there exists a harmonious balance of organic and artificial, neutral warm tones and deep blacks and new shapes with classic staples. Of all the things I love though, one of my favorites is what you can't see: a soft woodsy fragrance to sooth the senses.

I find relaxation very stressful. I am at my happiest when constantly engaged. (I have nerve-wracking memories of childhood vacations spent laying on the beach and thinking, "Why is my family making me lay on this beach and get sunburned? There are places to go, things to see! The world is spinning on without me!") What I want most out of a space is to be inspired, so I prefer to surround myself with color and glamour and items of age. More
Queen, for a day. From Lady Stark to dragon-rearing silver-haired beauties, bawdy dames and ladies in waiting, the women of Westeros and beyond the Wall are no Disney Princesses. They're strong, exotic, armored and sexy. Who wouldn't love a room where any of these women would feel at home, plotting their next move and making those silly kings feel like they wear the crowns in the family? More
I've dreamed of owning a blue velvet sofa for about as long as I can remember. But as a self-professed neat freak with a white fluffy dog — I have a feeling it would end badly. So its only leather couches for me, but it doesn't mean a girl can't dream! This is my version of my dream living room, based entirely around my blue velvet sofa. More
From grand dining rooms to sketchy mead halls, torch-lit castle chambers to the mysterious glitter of Qarth: north, south, east, and Westeros… there's a lot of style inspiration in Game of Thrones. Here, a collection inspired by the books and TV series (including an over-the-top replica of the Iron Throne), all available now, in a mix designed to evoke the exotic, rough and regal in a way that works right now. Well, maybe not with that actual throne. (Wildfire sold separately.)
Here at Apartment Therapy, we spend a lot of time pondering the important stuff, such as: why are whales so friggin cute? More
This living room is what would happen if Marimekko had its annual office party at a biker bar. It's both happily bright and a little on the dark side. It's also sophisticated and playful at the same time. I love the black leather combined with neon flashes of candy consumer pink. All that contradiction keeps people guessing.
I always imagined I would end up an archaeologist when I grew up, or perhaps a scientist, so it was quite the surprise that I ended up a writer and interior designer. Because of my love of science, old things and other cultures, my dream living room would be a bold mix of bright colors, global patterns, modern accessories, Mid-Century Modern-inspired furniture pieces and more.
