Inspiration for my palette:
My bedroom is small but I didn't want to use that as an excuse to shy away from dramatic color. I was always disappointed with the light gray I painted the bedroom in my last apartment. It lacked a certain weight I was looking for.

My new bedroom has extremely tall windows and gets wonderful afternoon light. I felt that, despite its petite size, it could handle a dark saturated color. It took three apartments but I finally painted this bedroom the dark gray that I've always wanted but never had the guts to go for.
Colors used in my room
A neutral dark grey was the starting point for the room and I balanced it out with cream and a color I relate most closely to that of mint toothpaste.
Tips for using color successfully
I don't think I can limit it to just one tip. There are three things that govern pretty much every painting project I get into, including those from my career as a painter: 1) Don't feel limited by the color that comes out of the can. There isn't a single color in my apartment that isn't a mix of at least two colors - except for the cream that the apartment was painted when we moved in; 2) Never feel like you have to paint the entire room. I knew my space would feel too dark if I painted the whole thing dark gray. So I broke it off at an angle and then softened the edges with large triangles of a minty aqua green; and 3) At the end of the day it's only paint. Don't be afraid of it because it's not hard to change. I went through two apartments while shying away from the dark grey bedroom I really wanted. All because I was afraid it would be too dark. In the end it's exactly what I've always wanted and I love coming home to it.
