OK, so technically, we're a day or two (or three?) late from wishing our own dear Abby (pun intended) a happy belated birthday. But just in case she thinks we dropped the ball, we've decided to dedicate this post to her and her gorgeous home the best way we can know how: by pairing up each room in her home with...what else? Cake!
A few years ago, we remember seeing an entry over at one of our favorite blogs, Decor8, that found beautiful cakes to go with inspiring rooms and homes. When we read it, we thought it would be a really fun exercise to do ourselves; so when Abby's birthday rolled around, we jumped at the chance to try our hand at it. Take a look at our pairings:
Surprisingly enough, it was actually harder than we thought to find the right cakes--especially one that is just the right shade of pink to match Abby's lovely chair. We finally settled on this simple one featuring tiny pink flowers mainly because the colors were spot on.
Abby's living room is a vibrant mix of earthy brown matched with orange and pinks--something this tiered chocolate cake with its cascading bouquet of gerbera daisies and lilies shares.
As energetic as the living room feels, the kitchen has that old Hollywood glamour with its black and white color scheme that is warmed with wood tones from the cabinets and vintage dining set. But the real showstopper is, of course, the chandelier. There were a lot of black-and-white cakes to choose from, but we ended up picking this one lace-inspired cake as it reminded us of that same 40's era when women wore mysterious black lace netting over their faces.
You know what's difficult? Finding grey cakes. So we cheated and opted for this light, light blue and mint green cake. At first, we were hesitant--it seemed like such a stretch to go with Abby's calming (yet still glamorous) bedroom. But then we found the photo of what the cake looked like inside, we went for it: The chocolate layers with its mint filling made a nice visual connection to the zebra rug, and the light blue of the fondant sort of matched the wall paint. And if we REALLY wanted to make the stretch, we'd say that the ornate details on the cake match the moulding in Abby's apartment. But that could be pushing it...
And finally: the infamous bathroom with its crystal hanging toilet and purple seat cover. The tiles in her bathroom are gorgeous, and we liked the lavender and yellow color scheme--hence the lavender cake lined with golden-brown madeleines.
And on that note, we're gonna to have to "drag" Abby to Lark cake shop and get a sugar fix. Happy belated birthday, Abby!
