When we used to live in San Francisco's SOMA district, our loft had no closets whatsoever. So this very affordable solution would have worked well for us, especially given the industrial quality of our place: a simple chain hanging from the ceiling with hangers for shirts, coats, and pants (S-hooks can hold scarves, belts, and hats).

Now that's an interesting thought - would work well to catch dry-cleaning or as a "Coat Rack" for a party.
i like this idea! I have a loft with no closet thx
I just bought some cathedral chain last weekend to try this out for my landing strip - no closet downstairs in my studio "townhouse," so I need something just like this! Now I just have to find a ladder to install it...
I lived in a studio with no closet for a while, I ended up making a kind of room divider with very strong ceiling anchors and ropes holding up a closet pole. By hanging all my clothing up partway across the room, it worked to give the bed area a bit of visual privacy. And as the ceiling was nasty popcorn ceiling painted white, when I moved out, I simply removed the anchors, slapped a bit of spackle into the holes, and got my deposit back. Wish that I'd taken some pictures, it looked better than it sounds.
This is a great idea as a way of airing out your already worn clothes before you really put them I away. Love it!
oh my goodness! I LOVE this idea! thank you very much.
great idea.
I wonder how it might work also in a garage with the s-hooks to hold a few tools?
