This is one of those things where I'm like, "why on earth have I not seen that before! It's the best idea ever!" Might be better with the drawer on the side though, so you can get into it without getting up.

That's a great idea. Too bad that looks like an extremely uncomfortable chair, good thing it's expensive.

i'd love something like this for a bedside table. blargh it's probably priced waaay out of my league. here's to hoping it's less than $100! :)

Well, since you asked . . . An item called a gentleman's chair was similar to this, but it was usually made with dark-stained hardwood and had supports built below the seat (connecting the legs). The supports were designed like a shelf to hold a pair of shoes.
Those chairs were sort of like the valet stands sometimes found in hotel rooms. You could put the stuff from your pockets in the drawer and your shoes underneath, even your suitcoat on the back of the chair. Everything was right at hand when a gentleman was getting dressed or undressed (i.e. keys and change went from pocket to drawer; he could sit down to take off his shoes and put them on the support/shelf). Obviously, the process was reversed when getting dressed: sit down and put on shoes; get keys and change from drawer and put in pocket.

I haven't seen anything like it but it's fabulous. I agree with kdkaboom-- I'd love something like this for a beside table...

MaeEast -- so funny, I clipped a picture of a gentleman's chair out of the skymall catalog (you know, the in-flight one with all the humorously useless stuff) because I thought it was genius. I like the looks of this one much better

Something like would also work well in an entryway (particularly if you don't wear shoes indoors). Keep keys, wallet, etc. in the drawer, use the chair to sit on when putting on or taking off shoes, or for items you're planning on taking with you that day (for me, this usually means library books).

My grandmother had a padded stool on wheels, with three drawers in it that she used at her sewing machine. Very handy.

I guess the trick would be to make sure it is completely closed before sitting down or you could get quite the pinch.

That drawer looks like a good place for your leg hairs to get pinched.

I have a really old valet chair (or gentlemans chair) in my hallway with storage under the seat for (I'm guessing) belt, cufflinks,monacle and other gentleman type paraphenalia and a nice wide tall back for hanging jackets.

I'm sure these have been around since about 1700 in England and Wales.

Would be so much better with the drawer opening to the side so you can use it whilst still seated
