Need a shelf? Why not use a chair? This is a fun idea for a summery entryway or in a casual bathroom for towels. And if you paint an old chair a bright color, you could use it as a way to introduce a breezy accent color — I love this turquoise!

I saw these chairs as shelves in the Dutch magazine vtwonen, and are inspired to try this at home. I've already amassed a few wobbly project-chairs that we can't sit on anyway, so this is a perfect use for them. I'd recommend hanging something like a chair onto coat hooks that are long and angle upwards so that the chair stays put — and to use a vintage chair with unique lines or a fun color. And then what an interesting focal spot to keep your keys, beach towels or mail!

I think they stick out too far to be a practical shelf. I could see myself constantly bumping my shoulders or arms into these (depending on how high they are). No, thanks.
I think I'm with AmandainAustin...I can totally see people (myself especially) bumping into them all the time. BUT, if you could find some cool little miniature chairs (doll chairs, kids' chairs, etc.), you might be able to alleviate that a little. And it'd still be cute.
AmandainAustin, That is exactly what I was thinking. I'm too clumsy to have something like that on the wall.
...ditto?
My sister lives in a small condo and did this. Then when she has extra guests she just lifts them off the hooks and uses them as seating! In the meantime it's amazing how cute they look up on the wall!
^ Very Shaker! (The hanging chairs and other things on pegs bit--not the using chairs as shelves.)
DO you all run into your furniture too? I think it looks great and this would work well in our entryway. Thanks for the idea --
Maybe over a deep console table if you have a lot of space? You wouldn't bump into them then. Could be a convenient way to store attractive extra chairs.
Otherwise, ditto above... I'd get a lot of bruises!
INT. CUTE HOUSE WITH HANGING CHAIRS - NIGHT: Hostess holds big tray of drinks and passes by the cute chairs hung on the wall. As she does, her loose long sleeve gets stuck on the ends of one of the chairs and she slips and falls down and all the drinks end up on the floor.
yes, they are accidents waiting to happen
I found two great chairs on the curb and was wondering what to do with them. I think they'll look great hanging in the living room with a vase or books on them. Great idea!! Thanks a lot!!!
Excellent way to store chairs while making them useful at the same time. It's like Shaker... with benefits.
I'm sorry, I think it looks silly.
I can see it working ... in an antique store. That's the only place it wouldn't look awkward.
It's very Shaker, yes. But it's also very traditional Danish and Scandinavian. Small apartment owners with little floor space would hang their chairs and then take them down when guests visited. But to be honest, I see the "shelf" idea as more of a practical idea for larger homes than smaller ones. Otherwise- use folding chairs?
lol how quirky and fun! it's not for everyone but the idea is nice enough!
I agree w/most here...it's a bunch of bruises just waiting to hurt me. And it looks weird.
Simple shelving isn't that expensive. Sometimes it's better to loosen the purse strings a bit and get what works rather than what's cheap and handy.
I probably wouldn't dislike this so much if these were in ANY other color but turquoise (aka: the most overused color on the planet right now).
What about the chair legs leaving marks on the walls. Those turquoise ones look metal and would scratch the white walls. And I agree with the other comments about running into them. Interesting idea though, but probably not practical in most homes.
Awkward.
Ugly and silly. Also in the same amount of time it would take to put in the pegs you could have hung a shelf!
i would only do that in my garage, and not to decorate.
they'd scratch up the walls, they stick way too far out, people would knock the stuff off of them all the time
My mother has two chairs hanging above her fireplace. She uses them for impromptu extra seating, and to deter misbehaving grandchildren. Both uses work like a charm. No one actually gets a fireplace perch timeout, but from the looks on their faces, they do spend quite a bit of time thinking about it.
