Q: My brother is redecorating his house and he loves this Pottery Barn dining table. He's asked me what kind of chairs to get with it. I'm more of a mid-century girl so I'm totally stumped on this one. Budget is around $200 (or less) per chair. Any suggestions?

Shaw's Original Fir...
Either dark wood or black windsor chairs would look great with that table!
Anything simple-wood, metal, wicker? If upholstered make them really tailored. Great table!
How about this in acid-washed black?

I would try to get that table to look a little more hip/modern by using wood Series 7 chairs or Marais iron chairs (check them out at dwr.com -- knock offs are at CB2).
Almost anything from Windsor chairs to Emeco navy chairs would go with this table - it's very versatile. In fact, I remember seeing a great post on AT about farmhouse tables and modern chairs sorta kinda recently. I also like the look of metal French cafe chairs from the thirties. While Tolix and Marais models are expensive, there are some cheaper versions out there.
Also IKEA has some great chairs for this table - the INGOLF, KAUSTBY, and STEFAN come to mind.
I really love the Madeleine chairs from restoration hardware (They're what I have in my kitchen) and think they'd look lovely with that table. http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1606019&categoryId=cat280016
Also they're conveniently on special right now. Rats. Too bad I didn't wait to get mine.
I'm a big fan of mismatched kitchen chairs. It depends on your brother's style, but I would find a few odd wood chairs from flea markets, then strip and paint them in various colors (blue, green, orange, etc). Or some dark wood folding chairs (antique or not) - you can find a ton of those on ebay.
All these ideas are better than those butt ugly wicker things in the pictures. Styling in Pottery Barn catalogs always makes me cringe.
Depends on the vibe you're shooting for in the rest of the room. And save up so you can spend more than $200 a chair.
PS: I love those "butt ugly wicker things."
Tiamat_the_red, are those Madeleine chairs really sturdy enough for daily use by kids etc? I think those are gorgeous but somehow they look a little fragile (which I admit is part of their beauty...)
If you purchase arm chairs, make certain that the arms will clear the skirt of the table.
I recently had a similar dilemma, my approach was Emeco 1944 US Navy stools...initially I wanted them to look a bit 'distressed' but the result of them new is good enough I'll keep them as-new for now...

um, I actually like the existing wicker chairs......
My wife loved this pairing!
We got our table from PB as well, a farmhouse style in a rustic pine. Chose to pair it with black slat-back chairs for a sleek look on a budget. Here they are in a color that I think might suit your brother's table well! http://bit.ly/zJNsPK Good luck.
