Q: I made a table very similar to this one, and I'm at a loss for what style of chair I should look for to match it. I love the industrial look but I don't want to overwhelm my dining area with it. What do you think?

Shaw's Original Fir...
Bright fiberglass chairs!
I say get a mix of chairs.
The Maraise chair in the ad from Industry West on this page seems like a natural choice. Honestly though, I think you could go a lot of different ways, really need to know what your style is and what the rest of the room looks like.
I would go with he Thatcher chairs (from Room and Board) or something like them.
Is your space more modern or fairly traditional? I can see traditional elements in the background of the photo, but not sure what else you have in the space.
If you're open to modern elements, I think eames shell chairs in white, or something similar, would be great!
i like these

and these

from world market
but without knowing what your overall style is it's difficult to suggest something. I also like the idea of clear acrylic chairs. Check overstock.com for some.
Ghost chairs would be unexpected yet totally mesh, and show off as much of that GORGEOUS table as possible!
This was also a first thought of mine:

I like these ones suggested by melissacj too...

My dining room table looks very much like that also (love it!), and I went with the Marais chair in red (http://www.industry-west.com/marais-side-chair). Really like it a lot. I did consider going with the Eames fiberglass chairs; I also think those would look great.
where do you find this table or the supplies (iron piping etc) to DIY???
The clear acrylic Ikea chairs would be good, might paint/patina the metal frame. Also could do a mismatch of wood chairs all painted bright red. Or a bench, 2 bentwood chairs opposite and upholstered parson chairs for the ends. Great table!
Crate and Barrel has some wooden chairs that come in something like 4 colors - I think they would look good with your table, old style, but more modern with the colors (I'd use all the colors.) They come with seat cushions, too, if you want something more comfortable to sit on than bare wood.
Forget the chairs, I want to know how you made this bad boy!
But yes, I agree that Fiberglass chairs, maybe use a bench on one side? I actually think that even though the table is industrial, that using a mix of chairs would give it some oooomph rather than be too much.
Depends on your style. If it were me, I would put something softer with it, like cream slipcovered chairs. But if you are leaning towards modern, maybe mix up the suggested ghost chairs with a bench and soften it with some throw pillows tossed on the bench.
I agree with something softer and overstuffed, if possible. I think it would make a nice juxtaposition.
I think it would be great to do captains chairs at each end and benches alongside (which you could diy to match the table).

The table looks vaguely nautical to me.
We have some mismatched but "plays well with others" chairs around our table. I just want to discourage benches, since I find them uncomfortable after an hour. There's something soothing about chairs with backs.
how about wicker and metal chairs?
I like the idea of red whicker chairs. I love red and it would really look nice against the golden wood.
first thing i thought is AVOID chrome, it will look so cheap next to ur lovely table. I think two benches would be too much. One solid wood bench, DIY'd to match yours would be great, have it against the wall side of the table so the bench has a backrest then. Also when all that seating isnt needed the bench can slide under the table and the table could sit against the wall on occassions when u need more floor space in general.
Then if u have a more traditional style to that room I would go with solid mixed match wood chairs, that are different but all resonate a similar character or feel. If your style is more antique industrial I think 4 hammered metal look chairs would work, in any colour u like- but this may not seem as welcoming to kids. Those captain chairs mentioned above look great! You can soften any of these options up with some handmade chair pads or cushions
Patina leather chairs with a darker wood frame that won't compete with your lovely table top.
Thonet or Ghost (/cb2 vapor)
I like the aluminum chairs, and these are affordable. They stack, which can be useful.
Or, if you like it more eclectic, look for metal office chairs; the ones with the old vinyl seats are easy to recover in fresh fabrics.
I would throw some vibrant color and softness against this beauty...it looks as if your room is neutral enough to let this be a centerpiece.
Anthropologist has some lovely little folding beauties...

if you like juxtapose that is... and the above options listed are also lovely...
Hi everyone!
Thanks so much for the suggestions. The picture I posted is not our exact table, as ours isn't yet finished. But that table is the inspiration for the one we're making and we're using the same black cast iron piping for the base. We haven't yet purchased the tabletop but we're looking for salvaged wood with real character.
We really like the Marais and Eames shell chairs, and the campaign chair from Cost Plus looks amazing but we too have concerns about that store's furniture quality. Ideally we'd prefer to buy used/vintage chairs rather than brand-new ones, so the Eames shell chairs really appeal to us. If anyone has any suggestions for other chair "shapes" we could search for on Craigslist or Ebay, I'd love to hear them!
We live in a tiny apartment and this table is in a corner of it. The rest of our furniture (that we love) is a mix of mid-century modern, rustic, and industrial. We really love old, hand-made and repurposed items (such as vintage crates as bookshelves). We still have some generic, college-student Ikea furniture that we DON'T love but we're slowly replacing it.
For those of you who were asking how we did this project, check out this post from Apartment Therapy: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/dining-room/diy-industrial-pipe-table-base-frugal-farmhouse-129374
Anything really... depends on your style and room. I could see midcenture modern, ghost, upholstered/high back with a glam print. Also could see a lovely bench on one side. More country/cottage slipcovered chairs.
Thonet, Thonet, Thonet, Thonet!
why don't go with a couple of miss matched chairs on one side and a bench on the other?
french vintage upholstered chairs are a great juxtaposition next to the rough nature of the table. <http://restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1617246&categoryId=search>
I would love to see pictures & instruction of the finished table. I didn't really love the one you linked to, but this picture looks nice and together with salvaged wood top it could look amazing. (Also, I am curious which chair route you will go, since I think there are many good possibilites with that kind of table).
Red Emeco chairs hands down.

Plus they are recycled!
Gus modern is having 20% off of dining the month of may
Distressed, mixed wrought iron garden chairs with different seats (woven rope, painted wood, upholstered, etc.).
west elm slip cover low back chairs, philippe starck hudson chairs, bertoia side chairs, dont go with clear chairs its a cheap ubiquitous look and evern worse after theyre scratched and dulled up. b&b italia swivel chairs in metal are awesome. expensive italian chairs make a great match with this table.
a bench on one side is cool ;-)
Arne Jacobsen series seven chairs, or a similar look ... check out this website I swear, if you love chair this will give you a chairgasm!!!

I'd stay away from anything with metal or unpainted wood - It would look like you tried to match the materials in the table and didn't succeed.
I'd go with a set of upholstered dining chairs such as these from Ballard Designs, perhaps in a nice taupe linen:

Thanks to everyone who answered my question! I ended up going with the Marais chairs in Gunmetal from Industry West, and had the table made by Scott's Rustic Furniture here in the Chicago area. The table will be delivered on Saturday and I can't wait!
