Chalkboard walls are not only functional and fun for a kitchen, but can also be used in a home office, a dining room, and a kid's room. As much as I love technology and managing my calendars and to-do lists electronically, I do still enjoy the nostalgia of school chalkboards and writing out my lists. Recently, I visited a friend who used the chalkboard wall in her office to write out her list of tasks for the day.
As I dream about painting one wall in my kitchen with chalkboard paint, I thought about the most practical and fun uses for chalkboard walls in different rooms in the home.
- Kitchen: Grocery List, Recipes, Menu, To Do List, Calendar, Love Notes, Important Phone Numbers, Phone Messages
- Living Room: Chalk Art, Poems, Quotes
- Dining Room: Menu, Recipes, Drawings
- Kid's Room: Math problems, Drawings, Notes to Mom, Homework, Chore List
- Office: To Do List, Calendar, Office Supply List, Conceptual Sketches, Phone Numbers
What are some of your creative ways for using a chalkboard wall?

I dig chalkboard walls, but I think perhaps the "10 Uses" title is a bit unwarranted here.
Love shot 3 with it on the ceiling and walls
I like the idea of a chalkboard wall, but I think they end up looking horribly messy in real life (like in the first picture) and terribly dusty. Not only would I be having allergy/asthma attacks, and worried about chalkdust getting everywhere including my food, I would have to wipe it down every day or two to get all the gross chalk residue off of it, otherwise it just looks so messy and gross.

LOL. True, basically you could sum up this post with "One use for blackboard walls: write stuff on it with chalk."
I agree about the chalky mess. I would rather have a chalkboard for my children to use (somewhere other than the kitchen and near food) and leave the mess there.
I like what Martha Stewart can do with chalkboard paint:

I want to know where they buy the "extra virgin toothpaste"...
I like chalkboard walls, but am so tired of the pictures of "shopping lists" where each letter is 3" tall. First, why would anything need to be written that large (except to photograph well for a blog or magazine). Secondly, if your shopping list is written on your wall don't you then need to copy it onto some paper to actually use it for shopping?
I don't like chalkboard walls (or other chalkboard painted surfaces) at all. I can't wait for the trend to pass. Looking at them makes me think of grade school friends scratching the surface and it make my fingernails hurt!!
I couldn't handle chalkboard walls so I painted lamps and planters with it instead. The lamps were ugly 90s behemoths and work great for leaving messages for roomies. the planters are also great for messages.
If I did use my chalkboard wall for lists, I'd just take a photo of it with my phone and go. Love the camera on my phone and also use it to take photos of signs near my car so I remember where I parked when I'm somewhere new or confusing.
Finally, pictures that show you what chalkboard walls look like IRL. Good job.
I have a long run of chalkboard in my pantry (the pantry used to be a galley kitchen, so it's about 14 feet long) on which I keep recipes that I use often but don't want to leave to memory -- Ina Garten's pie crust, Cooks Illustrated brownies, the best potatoes au gratin you have ever had -- and significant menus I have cooked for special guests, so I don't repeat them too often. I keep a few important phone numbers on the wall too -- the plumber, pizza and Thai delivery. And I keep discovering weird cartoons that friends surrepticiously draw when the come over for dinner.
Painted chalk walls do not clean up well -- you have to repaint every so often to keep things crisp looking.
Oooh, one other thing I have done: I had a bunch of pieces of thin wood that were about the size of a playing card. I painted them with chalkboard paint and wrote messages on them and tied them to gifts one year at Christmas. Brown paper and string with those... very cool.
Picture 3 is disturbing. Not only the "A Beautiful Mind" vibe mentioned by chesterandturdy (which I also thought when I saw it), but that Ball of Barbies... too kinky for me! ;^)
Another trend that needs to die...
I'd use it in a kid's room - I would've loved to write and draw on my walls as a kid. But anywhere else, it would drive me crazy.
Maybe part of a wall in a child's room or the inside of a kitchen cupboard door, but no where else. At first I think it would be fun, especially having guests write something on it but I think the fun would fade really fast.

OMG I just came back here to say that pic #3 looks like the room of a serial killer that wants to wear my skin like last season's Versace.
I have a freestanding wooden cabinet in the kitchen that we use for kids' art supplies. We painted it first with magnetic primer, and then with chalkboard paint. Suffice it to say it's been a big hit with the kids.
Nice way to give your child a new place to write and learn if you opt for this Chalkboard Walls or Chalkboard Paint in your kids room.
Please stop talking about chalkboard walls. You can write lists on them -- we get it.
would this work on orange peel walls?
Nothing says "OMG, that's awful!" like "hey, that would be great in a kid's room."
I would love it in an office, but would be too scared of the dust near my computer. I'm looking to use whiteboard paint instead. Looks a lot cleaner and not so dark with the black. ex. http://www.ideapaint.com/home/ideapaint
I love chalkboard paint! What I love more is that ball of barbie dolls! I smell a DIY project....
Tired trend. It's over.
I painted the inside doors of an big TV armoire (remember those big, deep TVs?) It was great for little bday messages, showtimes we didn't want to forget, quote of the day (or more like a month...lol) They're still there, but now I'm repurposing this TV armoire into my very own craft armoire (now that we've welcomed the new century and purchased a flat screen). These chalkboard painted doors will now be covered with pegboards for my scissors, and baskets for crafty things.
i LOVE LOVE LOVE the chairs in the last pic of the office... does anyone know where to get something similar? Thanks!
