In the past, whenever we've talked about putting fresh flowers in your home once a week, there's always a little fall out. Not because we're all flower haters, but because it can seem like a frivolous expense. So this year, instead of limiting myself to flowers I'm doing a 12 month anything-fresh challenge. Want to try it with me?
Even though flowers are easy and they bring much needed life into a space, my budget is tight like many of our readers. Though there are many inexpensive flower options, picking up a new bunch once a week is still money that could be spent on my home or personal needs elsewhere.
To keep the feeling of fresh and what it brings to my home, I'm expanding the world of flowers and making a commitment to bring something new into my home each month and make it something that livens the place up and gives you that something special.
To do this, I'm taking on that list of small house purchases that always seem a little silly when you're at the store. Pretty soap containers, small dishes to hold jewelry at night, socks that make you smile, a special additive for your coffee or morning cup of tea, even a new light switch or cover for that funky one in the bedroom you just choose to ignore.
Even though these are all things that don't have a huge impact, they are things for your home that make you smile, but when purchased outright it's easy to leave Target thinking, "I just spent $60 on nothing." A single purchase once a month will curb my household spending and increase my happiness by still getting what I want when it comes to the little things. I'm sure there will be flowers along the way, but for now, my goal is to channel my funds into all those little things I can never justify buying when there's other pressing things to buy — like the new Futurama Box set. Kidding. (maybe)

Great idea. We can't bring flowers or plants into the house due to cats who eat (and then throw up) both, so we try to bring in fruits and veggies that can sit out for a few days until we use them.
I did the Fall Cure over a year ago and I still remember the video of Maxwell clipping pretty twigs and such from the side of a country road. You don't always have to spend money to bring some plant life into the house (and even the dormant stuff can look great). Also, having a toddler has opened my eyes to a whole new world of natural, free decor: pine cones, rocks, sticks, etc.
Of course, I'm not advocating that anyone clip and steal from someone else's yard, and it's not always a good idea to cut flowers or dig plants from public spaces. You need to know what you're taking. :-)
Great ideas! I need to make myself use all of those "frivolous" home purchases. For whatever reason, I save things like candles for special occasions and then never remember to dig them out from the back of the cupboard when I have company. Why save stuff? I'm going to stop hoarding and start enjoying my few nicer things and indulgences. I can't afford many, so I shouldn't hide the ones I do have.
What a brilliant idea :)
Love it!
When I'm 'not buying flowers', bowls of fresh fruit like oranges, apples, grapes or nuts-in-shell bring that beauty to my place. So, I'm just shifting the charge to my grocery bill : )
I love the idea of bringing something new each month. We just moved into a new apartment and my walls need some serious love. But instead of doing them all at once, I will tackle one wall each month! That will be my challenge.
I've always liked the idea of having a bowl of lemons on the table. They add color to wherever they are.
Also, a friend of mine gave me some herbs that she grew in her garden. My sister put them in a glass container on the counter. They infused the room with their smell.
I only shop once a month. Really. I live in a high rise with a restaurant, so I don't have to grocery shop, and with Amazon, I don't have to errand shop.
I do shop once a month for fresh eggs and fresh fruit. It is fun to have fresh fresh fruit in the house. I don't buy fresh flowers. It's not because I don't like them, it's because my only vase, (I downsized), a 9" Waterford, is filled with eucalyptus my best friend's mother acquired by trimming her neighbor's trees.
It was an annual affair, and that year she came to the city where her daughter and I were living, in a pick up truck, with the back filled with freshly cut eucalyptus. Each of us received a half truck bed of eucalyptus. That was 30 years ago. What I have left makes a beautiful arrangement, along with natural string coral I found on a beach. I just can't see moving it for fresh flowers. It has such memories for me.
Love this. I'm that killer combo of busy and lazy, so usually fresh flowers just lay around dead for days and end up bumming me out. I do love a bowl of fruit, though, and something like a non-plastic soap dispenser would bring me joy on a daily basis (while also not dying and becoming gross).
I'm a huge fan of Billy Balls, also known as craspedia. They're little yellow balls on long green stems and bring some good sunshine into my house. Whether you put them in water or leave them in an empty vase, they dry into a nice mustardy color and last for several months. These are really popular in a lot of AT homes, and I can see why! I treat myself to a new batch every 3 months or so and just pop a handful into a vase or cool vintage bottle for a fun burst of color around my house.
I recently made us a "home improvement" budget that goes to both needs and wants. I still shop carefully, but when it's budgeted I no longer feel guilty for finally picking up that kitchen utensil drawer organizer, etc. Sometimes it really is the little things in life... :)
Flowers come out of farmer's market cash when I have some left over on my way out, so that $4/week comes out of the grocery budget. ;)
Also, we have live plants in the one window bright enough for them, they bring a lot of bright freshness into our home. We choose native plants so they are harder to kill. They also help keep our air fresh!
Love fresh. I feel good whenever I have fresh flowers and fruit.
