Name: Chancie, Dan, and Clark Meehan
Location: Mt. Washington — Los Angeles
Size: 2,000 square feet
Years lived in: 9 — owned
Chancie and Dan have worked hard to update and expand their tiny hillside starter home and the result of their efforts is a surprisingly harmonious mix of modern, traditional, rustic, and quirky — a combination that aptly reflects the home's inhabitants and its setting.
Chancie, a graphic and landscape designer, and Dan, a motion graphics designer, have worked steadily on the house since buying it together 9 years ago. One of their first projects as new homeowners was revealing the natural wood on the soaring ceiling, which required borrowing a truck large enough to haul a sandblaster up the steep winding streets of Mt. Washington — and barely making it to the top. From that first DIY to re-doing their kitchen, to finally completing an expansion mere weeks before their now 3-year-old son, Clark, was born, the couple have truly made the space their own.
The interior feels both modern and homey, a sense enhanced by the mix of furnishings from all eras, many of which are sentimental family heirlooms. Most irresistible about the space, is its gorgeous views of downtown LA and their outdoor oasis, landscaped using native plants — a perfect spot for watching spring come to the city.

Shaw's Original Fir...
what a wonderful mix of textures and styles!
Beautiful...so full of light! Love the "Time Out" chair.
A lovely home. But, "their tiny hillside starter home" of 2,000 sq. ft. Hunh? Really?
@pmaher It was tiny when they first bought it and they completed a renovation to expand it.
Yes to all of it!!!!!
Love all the wood! The ceilings are fabulous!
Love all the wood! The ceilings are fabulous!
Love that gray-taupe color on the bedroom walls. Color please?
Love the areas with "spots" of color. A little more color in the main living area please?
Beautiful home with great views.
Gorgeous! I love the windows and light. (and the wood ceilings)
Hello, LA neighbor. Love it. However, I think the island counter top should be bigger to make it more comfortable to use with the stools.
Its FAB! Looks like a real home!
So so good! Love it to pieces!
You got me at the kitchen...I'm breathless! The island could seriously use an overhang for the stools, though. I could spend the rest of my life in your kitchen. Beautiful throughout!!!
Much of it is very nice, but I'm a little in the "HOW MANY LIVING ROOMS DO YOU HAVE!?!?" frame of mind right now. XD Many couches!
Feels very calm and restful.... which is a very good thing when you have a 3-year-old. :)
That painting is incredible! I would love one done of my girls...any chance of that happening?
When they move out, I will be moving in.
I love that they have integrated family "hand-me-down" antiques into a lot of the rooms, including their son's bedroom. It works, even in such a modern house. My daughter sleeps on her great-great-great grandmother's bed every night and, although it keeps her from having a trendy PBteen look to her room, she knows how special it is.
I love this sort of sophisticatedly comfortable family home. It's been created with a very deft touch.
The only thing I'd do if I lived here would be to move the painting in the bedroom. There's something deeply freaky about being leered at by a couple of children while you're gettin' busy.
Love your home!
I'm amazed all those different style pieces could work together.... But they do beautifully. Esp. Love the orange design wall. Bold. And the bathroom chandelier.
Beautiful home, inside and out! Love the windows, high ceiling, and some lovely choices of furniture and artwork.
Love!
If this was my starter home I would never leave...seriously, gorgeous.
Agree with Rebecca... this is a DREAM home! The wood, the windows, the furniture, the art, love it ALL.
Am I the only one who is absolutely creeped out by the children faces in the bedroom? I would hate to wake up to this stare.
So much to this house. Kitchen tour please! (btw, what are the cabinets made of?)
yeah tiny and 2000 sf don't belong on at...or anywhere.
Would love to see a floor plan too.
There is certainly a lot to like about this place. It looks very interesting and very inviting.
Absolutely beautiful - possibly my favorite tour yet! Can you tell us where the cool kitchen sink is from please?
Lovely home- the kitchen, Main living room, dining room are just beautiful. The rest is such a mix but I like it too. Its personal and not carved from a magazine or store catalog. Nicest tour in awhile.
sleek,fun and natural class...
that painting might scare the begeezes out of me at night...
I find myself really drawn to this space. It is very serene. It looks high-end, but not pretentiously so. Lots of personality and quirkiness evident without a lot of splashy colors and statement pieces. Seriously hard to achieve!
Beautiful!
gray-taupe color is Benjamin Moore's Indian River.
Kitchen Cabinets made of White Oak, riff cut (with grain)
Painting…my dad painted of me and my sister, and you might be able to get him to do one of your child, but he lives in Hawaii and shipping might cost as much as painting, but I can ask if you like. I too, am not totally sure I like it in my bedroom. It was originially in my childs playroom, but when I had a fung shei decorator come in she said that wall/corner needed some red, so she grabbed that painting. It's a placeholder until I get something else. My son continually reminds me that is it supposed to be in his room "move it back mommy"
Thanks for all the nice comments. When you aren't an interior decorator you always wonder about what you are doing.
Classy but comfortably so! You have a great eye for detail....can you tell me where you got your navy embroidered bedspread?
Thank you Kiwicola…my bedspread is actually black and it's pretty old. It's by DKNY and I think it was called Urban Garden. It's about 8 years old, maybe try ebay…good luck!
