Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (West Philly)
The inspiration for our daughter Charlie's room began with our African safari honeymoon. Then I saw the giant plush giraffe and knew we had to get it - what baby wouldn't be drawn to a large exotic animal in his or her room?
From there, the colors fell into place; a clean, modern gray with a giant splash of bright yellow throughout, creating a frame of sorts for the artwork and wall decor. I cherish the vintage German flocked safari animals that my aunt had given me as a child and knew they'd make a perfect display.
The framed pieces are all DIY - I purchased frames from thrift shops and painted them glossy white, then selected a few pieces of colorful patterned paper to use as mats to highlight the vintage and retro artwork. I used a beautiful fabric I found on Etsy to make the valances, crib skirt and to cover the footstool.
The most problematic elements in the room were the hideous ceiling tiles. We decided instead of trying to rip them down and do a patch job, we'd work with what we had - the checkerboard idea was born. My favorite part of the room is the gorgeous built-in handcrafted by my amazingly talented father. I designed it, he built it. It serves as toy and book storage, a radiator cover and a large flat surface all rolled into one fantastically functional showstopper. I spend a lot of time in this room. It's my favorite one in the house.
