It took four hours and $30 and the difference is dramatic. My door is the first example shown above — the blue brightens up the entire room. I don't know why it didn't occur to me sooner to paint the door, since I am a firm believer in the transformative power of paint. This is one makeover that anyone can achieve!

I love this idea! Living in a hard loft, my door is steel and I'd love to paint over it... is there a certain type of paint to use for this (oil vs. latex)? Thanks ATers!
Love the blue and the dog!
We painted ours a bright turquoise! Specifically, Martha Stewart's Lagoon. And I smile every time I pass by!

i just painted mine a bright yellow, glidden dazzling daffodil. i have a split level entrance with no room for furniture and wanted to make it more interesting with art and a painted door!
I love painted doors. That being said, our starter home has crappy, cheap hollow-core doors, and though it doesn't seem cost effective to replace them, I'd love to wallpaper them. Does anyone know where you could purchase wallpaper that is around that size?

You could easily and cheaply add some molding to the hollow core doors and then paint. This would make a huge difference to the way they look.
Or paint it and add a wall sticker.
or look at these wonderful wallpapered doors

Agreed about what difference it makes! I recently painted the interior of my front door black.

You could also use a stencil. They have some pretty nifty ones on this site:

We are in the process of replacing our cheap-o slab doors from the 60s with cheap-o hollow-core six panel doors because we are about to put our house on the market. Didn't occur to us to try to dress up the existing doors. Good idea!
Just this past weekend I painted my interior door glossy black. I love it as the black make my door recedes and doesn't quite dominate the living room. The only down side is when I walk by my new door by for a slip second I think my door is open. It's only a matter of time before I get used to the new color.
We painted all exterior and interior doors a pale sage green this summer and I love the transformation it made in our home. We have a log home and the painted doors have made a huge difference in the look. Our doors were hand made and my husband (who made them) was reluctant to paint them. After a year and a half of "discussions" we finally did it. Our doors were pretty anyway, so I cannot see why anyone with those standard 6 panel white doors would not paint them. Go ahead, paint away. . .
What a great idea! I love it.
Never thought of doing that! Now I can add a pop of color to my living room without painting the walls. Great idea!
Painted doors rock. I was going to paint mine yellow - but I think it would have been overwhelming, since it's a very small entrance way. So I put up "faux" molding by spray painting some picture frames yellow.

The picture with the yellow doors was part of my inspiration.

Painted my front door RED years ago. I live in a strip of apartments and I love telling folks to look for the red door!
Next up? Painting my kitchen door ORANGE!
