The best kinds of DIY projects are those that can be done quickly & on the cheap. This project is functional, good looking, and won't break the bank! Minimal supplies are needed too. What could be better?

All you need is IKEA's multi-sized PRÄNT boxes, a selection of your favorite paint colors, and some of those little office clips. You can mix and match different sizes of the PRÄNT boxes for a unique look. I suppose you could do a simple grid too if symmetry is your thing.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I like the overall look but I don't know how I feel about the clasps! Maybe I could find something similar
Clever solution! I love IKEA hacks :)
I think it looks great in the photo but I wonder if it would look cheap in real life.
You can find binder clips in all sorts of colors. White ones would probably look even better than the black ones. Great idea.
If you are iffy about the look of the binder clips, you can simply arrange the boxes, use binder clips as desired, then unhook the wire parts and stash (or reuse or toss) them.
In the above example, you'd keep the black and remove the silver wires.
And many colors of binder clips are available. I really want to duplicate this at home. :)
By the way, do not attempt this with regular cardboard boxes. I have no idea how the IKEA kind works out, but my (admittedly cheaper) version fell over within a week.
This is 'inspired' by a product in the Design Within Reach catalog.

This is wonderful! So easy to do and so sharp. I want to do it. Ikea here I come.
Not a bad idea if you've already go the boxes, but by my math, this would cost more than $140 plus paint and clips. A little more than I'm willing to spend on something that may look cheap or fall apart.
You could probably even spray paint the binder clips to be whatever color you wish. I like the idea of simple wood boxes with little tabs of bright color between them!
Those PRANT boxes are pretty sturdy. But stacking them and putting things in them calls for a little extra support, maybe a rail that you place at the back of a stack of the boxes and secure each box to. I think it would be pretty simple. The boxes take paint really well, so there's a lot of uses for them. And they are completely flat pack, so they are a better idea than pre-assembled milk crates and the like.

Pretty sure this is plywood rather than cardboard....
Just starting this DIY this week. I'm also utilizing the lids, and colors inspired by the Eames shelves :)
