In an ideal world, we'd use nothing but cool vintage Pyrex containers for storing leftovers. But in an ideal world these containers would still be as cheap and plentiful as they were before they become sought-after collectibles. Enter these very simple, very affordable, very kitchen-friendly Frigoverre glass storage containers from Bormioli Rocco.
Sure, they may not have the vintage charm of Pyrex, but after taking Frigoverre for a test drive, we can tell you that there's a lot to love about these containers. In addition to being freezer-, microwave- and dishwasher-safe (though not oven-safe), the thick tempered glass makes them quite rugged and chip-resistant, and we love the fact that you can clearly see the container's contents. The polypropylene lids form an airtight seal, making the containers less likely to spill. In fact, we have yet to have a lid lose its integrity.
When not in use, the containers and lids nest perfectly inside each other, and when they are in use, the square containers fit neatly side by side, maximizing precious fridge/freezer real estate.
And the price! Ooh, the price. We got our set of three pieces (plus lids) on sale for just under $20. Given what good, honest workhorses these pieces are, we reckon it's a bargain of an investment over the long haul.
Find it:
- Three-piece square starter set, $22.95 at Amazon
- Four-piece round set, $29.95 at Cooking.com
- Individual pieces in assorted sizes, $4 to $8 each at Kitchen Stuff Plus

I recently saw on your post "Ways to Reduce Your Exposure to BPA" that we should look for unlined glass. Why is that? And are these ones featured above unlined?
Good question @thaispacci!
Maybe there are glass containers with a plastic internal lining? Why they would do this boggles my mind...
By the way, Costco sells a 8 pack of glass containers for $30. (I was unable to find them on Costco.com however).
They come with a plastic lid which is not suitable for microwaving, but the lids make the containers water-tight from what I can tell.
I think they are a very affordable alternative to Pyrex.
Oh wait, I found them: Snapware Glasslock

Over the last year, I have switched over to glass for refrigerator storage. I have used Frigoverre and I have used Pyrex and Anchor Hocking. All my Frigoverre pieces are gone, now, due to EXCESSIVELY chipped rims, resulting from ordinary, everyday usage.
The Pyrex and Anchor Hocking are still going strong. I do not have the old "vintage" Pyrex or Anchor Hocking pieces, but the contemporary pieces which are tempered, freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. They are reasonably priced, and a far better value with LASTING quality.

I haven't tried these containers, but I LOVE the Snapware Glasslock containers linked above, which are completely leak proof (I can fill the container with soup and put it sideways in my work bag without any worries). The lids are not microwaveable either, but it hasn't bothered me and I've found them to be an excellent value.
I have 2 of the round ones, since I find round to be easier to clean than square: http://www.amazon.com/Glasslock-Food-Storage-Container-Round/dp/B00167Z3JY/ref=pd_sim_k_7
@thaispacci Some bottles are lined with with BPA-containing plastic, but this more of an issue with metal, not glass. These containers should be safe, as neither the glass nor the polypropylene lids contain BPA.
I just asked for these on our wedding register. They come in all sizes—rectangular or round. I think the lids are microwavable, but microwaving with plastic isn't a good idea, in my opinion. Good price too.
