This 360-foot long tunnel in Amsterdam has been adorned in iconic Dutch imagery. 80,000 tiles comprise the scene of herring fishing boats being protected by a warship.

The pedestrian and cyclist tunnel leads from an older section of the city to a newer one, and the scene encourages cyclists to slow down.

"The whole recalls old kitchens in Amsterdam canal houses," says Benthem Crouwel Architects, "so that the tunnel is experienced as a safe place—as an urban room."
