Semihandmade has made some updates - they have a new look and a new gallery of images of the incredible things they do to IKEA cabinets and casegoods just by swapping out the retailer's MDF door fronts for fine semi-custom replacements.
The process is easy - plan your layout with IKEA, and order everything you need to install the kitchen except for the door fronts. Select the style you want with Semihandmade, and send them your kitchen plans. They have many options including shaker, walnut, teak, and gorgeous reclaimed woods. By using these doors on IKEA cabinets, you'll still save 30% of the cost of a fully custom kitchen, and they function and look as good as pricier options.

I bookmarked this post, thanks.
Nice alternative. It helps you get a not so basic Ikea Kitchen. I think we may push the idea by putting floor tiles on the cabinets, if you get what I think of... I plan to do that trick for an Ikea black trunk that cries its so common look.
BEWARE: music plays on their site when you first visit.
Why do businesses drive away web traffic with music?
Cool, I guess this would work on non ikea cabinets as well. I want to redo my kitchen but I am against throwing out the perfectly good boxes that are the cabinets when I should just replace the doors. Unfortunately they are not ikea sizes.
You can reface non-Ikea cabinets. Do a google search for "cabinet refacing" in your area. Someone will pop up.
Good for you funstraw! Older cabinets are probably REAL WOOD and much sturdier than the Ikea glue and sawdust models.
this is a fantastic resource! thank you AT for bringing this company to my attention. when i do my kitchen project in a couple of years, this will be a company i seriously look into for my cabinets!
Funstraw,
Refacing generally refers to traditional, "framed" cabinets, as opposed to IKEA's frameless/overlay/Euro style. Either way, you can definitely just replace the doors and panels if the boxes are sound (and save a ton of landfill space), whether through a door company or local cabinetshop. One of the coolest parts of Semihandmade is the fact that we're talking old IKEA kitchens, too; that wasn't a market we'd really considered when we launched a year ago, but it's now one of the most satisfying sides of the business.
Thanks, everybody, for the kind words!
Can anyone identify the tile on the floor in the second picture?
I would also love to know where that table in the first photo came from. Any leads would be great.
guerilla & Habbyshaw: it's a Noguchi "Cyclone" table made by KnollStudio.
subway,
I have to keep searching, I just like the ikea ones. I also want DIY, but everyone wants to install.
don,
Believe it or not, they are not wood, but they are still sturdy and functional. And since all one would see in our kitchen is the front I don't see why I should replace them.
If color is your only issue, it's pretty cheap to have your doors sprayed by your local auto body shop. Auto paints are pretty indestructible.
@quiltmaster: Auto paint can get REALLY expensive. It costs about $3K to get an entire car repainted.
This is a great resource for getting some semi-custom work done!
@tbgboodler - I totally agree that music drives away viewers. Why do people keep doing that?!
There are a few other places that do this routinely. Over at ikeafans, there are lots of people who talk about getting custom doors done at various places. I think Scherr's is a name that comes up a lot. I haven't heard of this company, but I am loving the really rustic wooden doors up there. I may have to plan out a dining room sideboard now!
Great idea. Budget + a little bit of unique. Awesome.
Love the idea, am sure this would certainly appeal to many people.
