Everyone from Arthur Miller to Andy Warhol stayed there, Bob Dylan wrote it into his lyrics, and Sid Vicious allegedly killed Nancy Spungen in one of the bathrooms. The Chelsea Hotel is the emblematic residence of New York musicians, artists, and writers — and it has a famously shabby bohemian aesthetic to match. Could its sale change all that?
Located in the upscale Chelsea neighborhood of New York, the hotel is an 1883 building with 12 stories and 250 rooms — about half residential and half hotel. The asking price was not publicly announced, but in a statement to the press, spokesman Loren Riegelhaupt said:
- "The history itself makes the hotel what it is. Anybody who's going to be looking to buy the Chelsea knows that the Chelsea is the Chelsea, and there's nothing you want to do to change what the Chelsea is."
Maybe so, but speculations on the hotel's sale have predicted its character could change for the worse — am New York alludes to the spectre of the Gramercy Hotel and other buildings that have undergone "upscale face-lifts in recent years that rendered them unrecognizable."

Nooooooo! I just can't imagine that anyone withenough money to buy NY property would appreciate the delightful bohemian, seedy, artistic, funky vibe of the Chelsea. Certain wierdos and artists need a place like this to exist and thrive.
Tourist attraction in the making...
Sad.
God I used to hang there in the eighties. I really really hope they don't ruin it.
I'm the perfect buyer! I would promise to leave it exactly as is.
Sadly, I'm not in the market. :(
Does anyone have any idea how much it's selling for?
how much is the rent on apartments? there's a great tour of an artist's pad in the chelsea over on theselby. it is soaked in color, paint, glitter. absolutely thrilling.
Andy Warhol made a movie called "Chelsea Girls" about the many Factory regulars who lived in the Hotel Chelsea, but I don't think Warhol himself ever stayed there.
Aww man, I hope it goes to a good buyer, last time I spent the night there they were filming Law & Order and my concierge was a clone of young Keanu Reeves right down to his voice. I love this place and the Chelsea area. Hell man, they still give you a real key to your room. How awesome is that?
I'm sure anyone who can afford what they're asking will want to make profit-inducing changes. CAll me jaded. It's a shame.
This has been in the works for years; to make it into high end condo's. My artist dad had a top floor apartment there for 30 years in addition to his Paris place, and he was always worried this would happen, the management being so iffy and celebrity obsessed. Lucky for him, he passed away before this came to be, but the history that place has engendered is unforgettable. (My stepmother seeing Sid Vicious's girlfriend Nancy Spungen's body carried out, and nearly having a heart attack, for one!) It was the go to crash pad for artist's since the thirties, in all its dingy, leaking plumbing, peeling paint glory. A landmark which will be missed, like so many others of the glitzy faux city that is the new New York!
Considering how Chelsea and the surrounding areas such as Meat Packing district are filling w/ new condos, high-end boutiques and cafes - it would be foolish for any buyer to leave the place As-Is: run down, dirty & low-end (2 stars?) when they could invest in some much-needed upgrades & amenities and get rates comparable to that of the Gramercy Park (4 & 1/2 stars)
I love the place. It is funky, decadent, delightful. If I'm not mistaken, Leonard Cohen wrote a song about a strange sentimental meeting that took place at the Chelsea. The kind of song that haunts me still, just looking at thos photos...
