My husband and I are converting a rarely used bedroom into a media room that's ideal for lounging away our NW winter. I've done a great job so far of not letting myself get carried away, but then, as if they sensed my weakness...

CB2 sent our an email trumpeting their Movie Sofa. One look at it's clean lines and laziness-inspiring dimensions (88x40x26), and I can't stop thinking about it. As we have no CB2 in Portland, I'm wondering:
Has anyone seen/lounged on this sofa in person? Is it all that and a bag of chips, or does it just photograph well?
Alexis, we haven't seen this one yet in person, but are hoping the Chicago or New York readers have...can anyone give a quick report on the Movie Sofa?

I've seen it in the CB2 store in Soho and I think it looks really nice in person. I actually did not sit in it since I was looking for a couch to fit in a small space and this was way too long, but everytime I'm in there I see the guys lounging away on it looking very comfortable while their wives/girlfriends shop. I'm sure someone has sat in it and can be more helpful, but it's a nice looking sofa.
It is a huge piece of furniture that could easily be used as a guest bed. It's also neutral enough to be dressed up with a bunch of colorful pillows. Pretty comfy too.
I sat in this in CB2 and I would have bought it on the spot, but it's a little pricey. Knowing I could get something cheaper I didn't end up buying it, but I haven't found anything I think is nearly as comfortable.
it's a beautiful sofa.. but i wonder if the low back is comfortable when sitting up watching a movie?
Alexis, thanks so much for asking this question! I have been dreaming of this sofa for several months too. I also live in Portland and was nervous about buying without sitting first... I guess I have no excuse now.
I work at CB2 currently and know first-hand that the movie sofa is one of our highest quality pieces. It's made by the same company that makes Crate & Barrel's Petrie sofa and Room & Board's Andre sofa, but costs about $500-$600 less. As flower222 mentioned, it can be a little awkward as is; however, it's purposefully designed so that large, comfy throw pillows can be arranged along the back. Perfect for snuggling up during a movie you could say...
Whoops, sorry about all of the bolding. I meant to just bold flower222. Amateur mistake.
My wife and I bought this (traded in wedding gifts we decided we didn't need) and LOOOOOOVE it.
My ONLY caveat would be that it sits low, so if you have a giant TV which doesn't view well from low angles, you might want to put this on a platform or lower your TV.
Else, this thing "rocks." My wife had always complained that we didn't have a "make out couch." That's solved by this baby.
Got it in Chocolate Brown, matched it with several pillow options from CB2 and love it.
It looks nearly the same as IKEA's new 4-seater Klippan sofa:

Sure it's shallower and certainly not as well made, but at half the price it seems like a fairly good deal.
More reviews please! I live in Tallahassee, and we don't even have a Crate and Barrel!!! I appreciate all opinions
I can promise that the IKEA sofa looks poorer in person than it does online, but the CB2 sofa looks the same, if not better, in person. I'm not saying this as a CB2 employee, I'm saying this a furniture fanatic. If the post had been asking about the "true" collection at CB2, I would have expressed all of it's IKEAesque, particle board crappiness.
i'm sorry but i have to disagree with the reviews. my friend and i have sat on the sofa (it was my first choice) and were utterly disappointed. it's very flimsy and seems like it will just need to be replaced in about a year. the random lady who was sitting on the it next to me agreed also. but this is only 3 peoples' opinion. maybe we just all had similar taste in sofas. (i do like my sofas a little firm tho..)
As for the low back, I had the Klippan sofa when I lived in NYC - the low back never bothered me, and I definitely like getting comfy.
I never thought our Klippan was unattractive... and now you can buy so many fabulous third-party covers for it that you can have a "new" sofa every few months! Ours got a little more used-looking over time, but it was the only seating in an apartment with three people, so I wasn't terribly surprised. It held up well after 2 years, and I was sad to see it go when we all moved out.
I recently went to CB2 to check out the movie sofa because I too am looking to purchase a new sofa. I really enjoyed it. It's low and deep and comfortable. I think it would be great for movie watching, and if you have a guest - a place to sleep. My question is: If anyone has had this sofa for a long-ish period of time, how has it held up? (is it worth investing in)
Uhhh, can I be the voice of reason here? I had such an immediate reaction AGAINST the movie sofa that I had to write. I've been looking for a light colored sofa with clean lines (for lounging and sitting) and I have seen and sat on the movie sofa in the CB2 store in NY and my immediate reaction was--absolutely not!
I suppose it definitely depends on what your usage will be, and if you are indeed looking to be on your back 100 percent of the time then it is probably not an awful option. But, unless your legs are six feet long, you will not be comfortable sitting upright. And what's with the no pillows? I kept wondering if someone had accidentally removed the back cushions from the floor model--it really looks like an unfinished couch (mind you, it looks great in the photo). And for $1,000? They couldn't spare it??
I actually did wind up getting Ikea's Klippan sofa (the two-seater) since I am in a small studio and it's just me. Of course it's slightly clunkier looking but it's also sturdy, yet comfortable and perfectly fine for lounging as well as sitting up...and for $250 bucks? I couldn't beat it.
It's pretty non-descript on it's own, but here's a shot of it in a room...not bad! :

I wish I had the $ to replace my Jasper sofa from R&B with this one. I thought it was really comfortable. You do sit a bit lower in it, but I kind of like that about it. You'll definitely need pillows to arrange along the back and sink into, but it's plenty deep to accomodate them. I say go for it!
Thanks everybody - these are great comments!
A few thoughts:
I'm okay with the low back (I think) and lack of pillows. One thing I really like about this sofa is the lack of individual cushions, and I have plenty of "toss around" pillows I can use (I like these best because you can switch them out with the seasons, mood, etc.). The option for guest sleeping is a huge plus.
GrayinNYC - I see your point. We're both curl-up types though (I'm a leg tucker) when it comes to sofa sitting, so I think we'd be okay with the depth.
Chickimsoup's comments are concerning. While I like the idea of a cozy, sinky feeling couch, I don't want that sinking to get lower and lower with time...
I can see the similarity to the Ikea sofa, but I've never been overly impressed with those in person. My hope would be that this would be of a quality worth the higher cost. That's the kicker really - how long can I expect this bad boy to last?
I did call CB2 to inquire about a warranty. I'd heard they have one, but could not find any mention of it on their website. The rep I spoke to said they do have a lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects. I asked what I'd do if something broke and she said they'd send out a "furniture medic" to assess the situation. I may be cynical, but can't help wonder how often those medics qualify the piece for replacement.
Also worth noting, if you buy CB2 or Crate & Barrel furniture and move, regardless of length of ownership, any warranty is VOID. Anyone know if that is common practice?
I know I've been a bit long-winded, but it looks like a few other folks have been eyeing this sofa too...
Thanks again!
I just bought this sofa and it is amazing! At first I was kind of turned off by the low back. But after sitting on it with a bunch of large throw pillows its very comfortable. My favorite part of this piece is its contemporary look. The upholstery is silky soft. I highly recommend this sofa!
I was just doing a search on how to clean this couch, but since I've had it for almost 2 years now I thought I'd write a comment to add to this string in case others were considering it.
I LOVE this couch. I really, really wanted the Petrie from Crate & Barrel, but couldn't afford it. My husband bought me the Movie couch for xmas after we saw it ON SALE for $600! I don't know why it was on sale--maybe someone returned it.
Anyway, it's great. Sometimes I worry that the cushion may be too soft and that it won't last long, but so far it's held up even with a 2 year old bouncing on it every chance she gets.
We needed something that the 2 of us (hubby & I) could both sprawl on while watching movies and my hubby sleeps on it a lot because he falls asleep watching movies.
Now, my only issue is cleaning it. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm tempted to throw the removable cushion cover into the washer, but terrified that it will shrink.
Since we have cats and a toddler it seems like a good idea to wash this thing every once in a while.
We purchased our slip covered movie sofa approximately 10 months ago because we liked the shape and size of the sofa, along with the slip cover color.
We do not recommend this sofa to anyone as the main cushion you sit on has worn very poorly and offers no support, even with minimal use.
We are going to have to have the main cushion rebuilt if we want to keep the sofa and CB2 said that it is regular wear and tear. CB2 also will not publish my review as it "does not meet their review guidelines."
The slip cover also requires a lot of ironing / steaming after washing to get the wrinkles out.
We purchased this sofa because of the price point, but should have waited and purchased something nicer as we're having to have the cushion rebuilt and pay for that.
I saw this in the CB2 catalog and was SO stoked to check it out..that being said , completely disappointing in person.
I really liked the slipcovered fabric and the shape of it, & I loved the options of mixing up the pillows. However, as soon as you sit on it you realize it's NOT well made-the cushion squooshes down so there's about an inch of foam between your tush and the frame (yes I just said squoosh and tush in the same sentence). It also didn't feel fell sturdy-the legs felt wobbly. When I asked who the vendor was the salesperson was vague-she said it's made in Carolina (DUH). I asked her if Lee was the manufacturer and she said no, another company.... I didn't press it after that but I just got a weird vibe. I thought I had found a great piece for a decent price (sigh)...I'm going with my first love (although above what I though I would pay)-the Oasis from Crate & Barrel. I now know why it's so much more $$ than the Movie sofa- world of difference in quality. If I were to go lower end I'd just get the Klippan, but since this will be my main sofa it's worth the splurge.
i just ordered one. i've sat on in it CB@ of four separate occasions. I too was worried about the low back. However, with big pillows, it's fine. As for the support offered by the bottom, it seems fine, but i've only sat on it for about five minutes at a time. i weigh 151 and am just under 5' 7". i'm a personal trainer so i'm all muscle and have very little body fat. because of my height, if i didn't use a pillow, my feet would barely touch the floor. if i weighed 25-30 pounds more, maybe the cushion wouldn't be strong enough. i don't know. at my size, i naturally pull my legs up onto the sofa. or i stretch them on the coffee table. this may be displacing some of my weight.
i owned a klippan from ikea for four moths. the movie sofa is infinitely better.
the movie sofa is super comfy. it's like a daybed/sofa. without pillows, it wouldn't really be a sofa. just a bed.
if i could have spent twice as much, i would have bought something else somewhere else. but for the price, it's, i think, the best sofa available.
i sat on the avec sofa and the parlor sofa. neither have enough depth to really sit back in. the parlour sofa has a high back, but it has no angle and it's just hard. totally uncomfortable. the avec sofa's back is similar. there's no question that the movie sofa is cb2
s most comfortable sofa. however, you may find a better sofa at DWR for 2000.
btw, i'm a guy.
I checked out the movie sofa this weekend at the Soho store and was very impressed. I like the slipcovered one because we have children and cats. I am actually excited to get some pillows and already checked out IKEA for some fun pillows I also think that Target has some good ones (the pillows at CB2 were a little young for me). What attracted me to this was the single bottom cushion and the clean lines and the ability to change out the back pillows when they get worn from one too many of my husband's marathon movie weekends with his friends. We also want a big comfy sofa to sink into during family movie nights and this really fits the bill. It's probably not a good sofa if you want a "chatting" sofa for when guests are over since there is no way to sit elegantly on this even with a lot of pillows behind you. It is designed to lounge and pull your feet up. However, that being said, I am concerned that the bottom cushion will need to be freshened before the back pillows. It was comfortable, but not very thick and I can imagine a favorites spot on the sofa getting a butt crater pretty quickly. The good news is that these cushions aren't too difficult to get restuffed at a local upholstery shop. The Movie Sofa is definitely more expensive than the Karlstad at Ikea (our 2nd choice), but it is also much cheaper than anything else than can be considered comparable in quality of both the fabric and construction.
All of this being considered, I will order the slipcovered version and understand that the bottom cushion will have to be restuffed every year or so and that if we ever move to the suburbs (god forbid), we will have an awesome rec room sofa. In which case I will buy the CB2 Avec Sofa for my chatting with guests sofa since that thing rocked.
