Colleen sent us an email: "Help! I painted one wall in my living room Hallowed Hush by Behr. It is a teal color and looks a bit darker than these pictures show. I am concerned it is too bright and obnoxious for a living room. I plan on buying brown and cream throw pillows for the couch and a large tall vase with very tall pussy willows for the blank wall behind the leather chair...

Here are my questions:
1)What else can I do to deflect this too bright color?? I need help! Do you like this color or think its too bright?
2)I HATE the track lighting – it reflects off the shiny frames behind the couch and I just hate them anyway. How hard is it to replace track lighting. What should I replace it with? Recessed lighting. A flush fixture? Where is the hole in the cieling? In the middle of the track?
3)Speaking of the shiny frames – would it work to spray paint them a brushed nickel? Would the spray paint stick to a smooth metal surface? I can’t buy spray paint in Chicago so I have to either order it online or go to the suburbs. Does anyone know a good brand?"
Any input on the paint color, suggestions on replacing the track lighting and info on the frames would be appreciated. Share your thoughts and ideas with Colleen in the comments...

White Enamel Flatwa...
I like it. I think the trick would be to paint a more muted version of the color you have on the other walls.
i think it looks good. I think you should add more accent colors besides the brown/beige/blue theme. Some bright white items, orange would be nice to break it up
I agree with Nevanna.
I like it too. I agree with Sydney that you would need some more accent colors. And maybe it's because I can't see the whole room, but the furniture placement seems a little off and maybe that's why the overall room doesn't seem like it's working...
i really like it too! it's a great color, bold without being loud. Since it can still be called a neutral, it works perfectly with the color of the couches to add a warm, contemporary look.
Own it!
I like the color, I think it's the kind of color you need to get use to it. But if you don't like the light fixture you should do something about it.
I don't have advice, but rather I offer some support... I painted my entire living room and hall a very similar color called Velvet Morning. It's definitely a saturated color, but I love it. Seeing it makes me smile :)
I think it would be cool if you could throw up some kind of black and white patterned wallpaper on the other wall. And don't feel like you have to go with some lame neutral colors- play off the blue with orange, yellow accents!
Regarding the tracklights, I have seen pendant fixtures that are specially made to hang from a track. It's definitely more au courant than those standard issue spotlights.
I like it too. I would like to see more color in there though.
I like it too! Taking that color, but down a few notches, on the adjacent walls may work well. That's what I did in my living room (which has a brigher blue accent wall) and it turned out pretty well. Maybe you could use Behr Aqua Breeze or if you want more of a white with a tint Behr Cumulus?
I like it too (at least, judging how it looks on my monitor)... I think you are probably just getting used to such a strong colour... introducing some complexity of colour, texture and shape will help
I like the color - just not sure if you put it on the right wall.
From the photos, it seems odd to have a blue-wall behind half your sectional and a cream wall behind the other half. And the color switch splits the angled-bookcase in two, too.
I'd probably paint the whole room blue. The same color...not a different tone. You could reintroduce cream with a plain/solid area rug...
I used to have a living room wall that color and I loved it.
I like it too!
I like the wall color, and agree with the others that some colorful accessories would balance things out nicely. Replacing a ceiling light fixture isn't too difficult, but it looks like the box (where you would be able to put another fixture) wouldn't be in a desirable spot. Instead of replacing the track, I would put it on a dimmer (if it's not already) & play around with the positioning of the lights... it looks like they might be aimed at the wrong spots.
i guess i am the only one who doesn't agree with your color choice. i would go with a taupe-ish tone.
regarding your picture frames, there is this great product called permalac that i just discovered. they make it in a flat or satin finish, go with the flat. it is also a great product for keeping outdoor metals from tarnishing. i love zinc flower pots, but they usually loose their luster pretty fast. i gave my newer ones a coating with permalac, and after months outside they still look brand new. i highly recommend it to anybody who has brass house numbers, name plates, or wrougth iron fixtures. i haven't seen it in stores yet, but you can get it at sculptnouveau.com. and no, i don't work for the manufacturer, i am just a happy consumer.
I like the colour; i'd recommend adding in some accent pillows (or something) that picks up the colour, plus perhaps one other accent colour. That way it won't seem like such isolated brightness.
It's a beautiful color, but if you're wondering if it's too bright or obnoxious, than it is. (In other words, if you're questioning it rather than loving it, it's not quite right) In that case, maybe repaint one shade darker, and one shade grayer (meaning, go 1 down on the color chip, then go 1 color chip over to find the "right" color).
Replacing the track lighting will require an electrician and may be expensive. Pottery Barn has some nice style track lighting - perhaps they have something you will like. Also, the type of bulb and housing affects how the light is "sprayed" so that might be your problem more than the concept of track lighting. Recessed lights are awesome, but retrofitting them in a pain in the butt and will be costly.
I think it shouldn't be blue behind the sofa...or just not the two colors at the corner...either taupe taupe or blue blue instead you should have wrapped the color around the corner where the chair/shelf thing is....you need some reds/yellow/oranges to balance out the taupe.
I like it, but you might consider tying the color in somehow with objects in your house. Maybe a couple couch pillows close in color to the wall. I think it would help to tie it all in.
I agree that you should paint the rest of the walls the same or one shade different color. Its very stark against the white of the other walls. Also definitely introduce other colors in there, a patterned rug would make a world of difference. I do like your furniture though, the tall chest is great. I may move the square mirror above the couch somewhere else, or replace it with a longer one.
Don't know anything about the light, although I think that the hole with the wiring would be in the middle of it. We had a track taken out and replaced with a ceiling fan and it was no big deal, took the electrician 10 minutes.
I really love it.
I agree with painting the entire living room the same color. Oddly enough, the blue would seem more subdued without the contrast to the white wall beside it.
I really like the color! Maybe you just need to live with it for a bit to get used to it. I second (third?) the suggestions to add some orange or other bright color. While I think your furniture pieces are fine, I think it should be re-arranged so it's working better for you. I think adding a rug would be nice, too. Overstock.com has some cool ones, maybe the zebra?!

For your lighting dilemma, are your track lights on a dimmer? If not, think about installing one & perhaps re-direct the light to wash the walls parallel with the tracks. It appears that you have a covered up light fixture base in the center of the room (2nd picture, foreground) so maybe you could add a fixture there.
You can dull your frames with matte clear spray paint:

I like the color, too, and think you should paint the whole room the same. The one wall seems out of place since the color is repeated nowhere else in the room.
Lighting is easily changed out, but leave it to an electrician.
As for the frames - sell them to me =) Really, though, where are they from? They'd be perfect for my living room!
I would change them out for all black frames...
I love the color too, but there's no bridge between the teal, the chocolate, and the camel. The colors work togther, but they're disconnected without a printed textile or bold art to harmonize them. I think some printed pillows that tie all three colors together. For example, ditch the camel pillow on the chocolate chair and use a camel and teal printed pillow.
And I think an off white area rug(s) to anchor the seating areas would be a big bonus. Right now, your casegoods and upholstery are floating.
Also consider adding a different texture. You have dark wood and you have upholstery. I suggest ditching the footstools for something like a round basket weave hassock. Adding texture will add the depth you're missing.
The color is absolutely gorgeous. Don't change it! I like the shiny frames and would ditch the track lighting (but I have no advice on how to do that).
Here's what I think would be really hot -- keep the walls and the frames, and try to add more shiny silver and (I swear I'm not crazy) more accents in CORAL and cream. Not brown. I think that aqua/teal plus cream, coral, and silver is hot, especially with some mod touches thrown in.
My living room is painted similar colors: a Tiffany blue on two adjoining walls (those which my couch faces) and an almond color on the others. I painted every room in my house when I bought it last year and it's the only room I'm not sick of already. My suggestion to you, which other people have also made, is to put dimmers on, or replace, those lights. I removed my ceiling fixture and only have floor and table lamps in my room. Since the lighting isn't bright, the paint color isn't as startling. I'll also echo the orange and yellow accent idea. And I don't know what your window situation is, but I found that using bamboo roman shades really warmed up the room too. Smith and Noble has some great ones, though Home Depot has some less expensive options if your room doesn't have oddly sized windows, as does mine.
the color seems so bright/dark because everything else is so muted. i agree with everyone else - add some more colors besides beige and it will help balance it out.
unless those were really expensive picture frames, just buy some new ones. i think it will probably be more trouble than it is worth to try spray painting them.
as for the track lighting - i'm no electrician, but i think, depending on what type you have, you may be able to leave the track but switch the lights. changing the angle/bulb/bulb color may help too.
Also... I have a similar color in my new hallway but I painted the baseboards dark while the door and trim are white. It seems to ground the color well and make it seem a little less airy (if that makes sense...)
http://horseychicken.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/hallway-done/
I have no idea if this would work, but if it's the shine that you don't like about the frames, could you maybe sand them (wear goggles and dust mask) with sandpaper to give them a brushed look? I agree with all of the comments about orange or coral accents and rugs.
I love the color and the shiny frames...
...but you need to paint the rest of the room - including the little hallway - the same color, hang the artwork nearly a foot lower and get an ivory or brown shag or flokati rug on the floor and get some orangey-red pillows/artwork & accent pieces in the room.
As far as the lighting - get rid of the track and hang a ceiling pendant and set it to swag over the center of a new square or round cocktail table - about 36-48 inches above the top.
And why is the chaise for your sectional on the other side of the room and your bookcase angled in the corner? Your furniture arrangement is lacking cohesion and focus...
I think you should have a beautiful persian rug with either red and blue or brown and blue and paint the other walls either khaki or deep red.
It would be nice if the couches were either deep red or blue, or failing that -- a deep red velvet tapestry throw and pillows in rich colors. Some amber -- maybe a lamp -- would be nice, too.
We recently replaced the track lighting in our bedroom with a single ceiling fixture. The electrical wiring was through a single hole in the ceiling in the middle of the track--so that part was easy to figure out. However, the sides of the track were also mounted to the ceiling with separate screws running along the length of the track. That part was more tricky--because those extra holes had to be filled in with mesh tape and drywall plaster and then sanded down (and sanding the ceiling is not easy). So if you want to replace the track lighting with a ceiling fixture, it's do-able, but may require some elbow grease. (I hate track lighting by the way, it seems very dated to me, but our new house is full of it. Yuk!)
I love the paint color! I would switch the art with the mirror, though. The track lighting would highlight the art perfectly, and the mirror will reflect the color on the other wall, both of which would take attention away from the wall.
Great color, though!
PS - I agree: orange, or even coral will be a great accent color.
I think you need to use some of that blue in your accessories. The walls are blue but everything else is muted. If you throw in a few blue pillows, vases, etc I think it would give the room a more cohesive look.
I love that color and agree that it should be brought into the rest of the living room maybe in pillows, a throw, or some decorative pieces.
I love it! Of course, i did the same thing in my dining room, hallway and kitchen. It's a happy color. : )
Please do NOT get rid of the track lighting. DO get a dimmer. It will make all the difference in the world.
About the color? I think that in the first picture (the one with the chair and the chaise longue), whatever color goes on that wall should be neutral enough to that tiny bit of wall that doorway is on that we see on our left. In other words, if that blue would look good in that room, then wrap THAT around there.
I don't necessarily think the whole room should be all one color. However, I agree with whomever it was that said the wall corner behind the sofa needs to have all one color, instead of the harlequin effect that gives it. Part of that is just because the white is SUCH a contrast.
I think that if you could buy a quart of a tan color that completely matches the sofa, and paint that area around that door, and the wall behind the club chair.
THEN slowly mix SOME of it into that bucket of that blue, you might come up with a color that would be really nice for BOTH of the end walls (the one with the mirror and the one that the back of the chaise longue is up against) and possibly that other wall that we can't see... the one that seems to be a bank of windows? When you're mixing that color (which should be gorgeous, by the way), stop when you think you like it, paint it onto something and let it dry, and then put it next to the couch, etc. so you can see what it does.
BUT... I think I'd leave the wall behind the couch that has the 3 pictures exactly as it is.
But then.... PLEASE use some of the blue in some accents around the room -- candles, vases, throw pillows, and stuff like that.
The result? You'll still have ONE wall that blue color, but the other walls will have a little bit of gradation and variety, but nothing too jarring.
I agree with a lot of the previous posts. A dimmer switch could really solve the lighting problem.
You could also put picture lights above your artwork to add more indirect lighting (Ikea sells them). As for the frames, you don't have to repaint them but you could sand them with a really fine sandpaper to get the same effect.
Check out some pillows by Galbraith and Paul (Room and Board sells them as do other online sites). They make gorgeous throw pillows with distinctive colors that could really make the room come together. Orange, white, or even chartreuse would make great accent colors. They aren't cheap but RnB often has them on sale.
I agree with others. The thing that is making this jarring is the furniture placement. I would square the bookshelf either up against the blue wall or up against the taupe. Just try it. You can always move it back. I have a feeling that once the bookshelf is only being framed by one color it will be much more relaxing to you. The couch is a little trickier since it is a corner unit. I would paint the other wall behind the couch blue also. So essentially you would have two blue walls and two white. I mean that's completely up to you obviously...but I think that you would be much happier.
i think that color is gorgeous. i would think about painting the other walls an off white or light grey. 'stone' by ralph lauren is a really amazing color.
I like it. You need to add some throw pillows that have some color in them to tie it all together.
That's the color of my living room. Nice choice.
If you think this is too bright, my place would give you a coronary.
That said, I say stick with it. Or like others offered, paint the whole room that blue. It's nice!
I like it. I think you need the bright color in there since everything else is neutral neutral neutral. I even like the frames as they are! Although... i'm totally with you on the track lighting. Hate the stuff. No idea how to get rid of it, unfortunately, but anything's gotta be better.
The teal is lovely. You have a similar color on the throw, and it goes well with the taupe. My suggestion would be to envelope the room in the teal, and then use an orange for punctuation--not everywhere, but regularly to give relief. The suggestion to add some black is good too, because it further grounds the room.
It wouldn't be too bright if some of the oatmeal, taupe, and brown colors in the furniture were changed to other colors. As it is, the Hallowed Hush's main function seems to be to make everything else look drab. Upholster in colors?
I LOVE IT!!
I love it, looks like a gorgeous blue sky
Here's an example of the type of pattern you might want to add.

I think your choice in color is fine, but I cringe when I see that someone has ended an accent paint color on an outside corner of a wall. When you do that â the accent color immediately stands out as and âappliedâ material, and thus becomes less significant. To truly accent the architecture, and / or overall interior space I always recommend to my clients, & friends to have an accent color end on an inside corner of a room, and stay away from those outside corners.
it looks fab, girl.
I like the color, I think maybe you just need to pull more of it throughout the room. You could add some pillows/throws/rugs to help pull it together.
Try Benjamin Moore's Palladian Blue instead
UPDATE FROM COLLEEN:
Thank you everyone for your advice! Trust me - I know what I need to do and want to do - unfortunately I have two obsticals. A husband and a budget! :) So buying new frames, new art, etc is appreciated but unfortunately not an option. My husband agreed to painting on the condition that I wouldnât spend a ton of money redecorating the rest of the room. I suppose he has a point but if I had no budget restrictions â I could decorate the heck out of this room in the right way. Ah to dreamâ¦.
Here is why i did the things I did and what I did to save money plus some updated pictures:
Track lighting â not going to change. My husband doesnât want to do the handiwork - and he is very handy. He see's nothing wrong with the lighting and unless I am willing to do it myself, it stays. I have repositioned the lights and they are on a dimmer. So when guests come over I will definitely dim the lights. Plus I added a lamp on the ledge by the bookcase for some ambient lighting.
Frames â not painting them. Now that the track lighting is less direct, they aren't so shiny. I considered sanding them and tested it on a fourth frame I have. It didn't look good. I also tried matte metal paint - didn't look good. So stay they must. Budget and a husband prevent me from changing them out.
Paint - I love it now. When I emailed AT the first time, I was in a bit of a panic the day after painting. It has grown on me and I am all good now :) I do wish âheâ would let me paint the rest of the room as many of you suggested but comprimise is what marriage is all about ;) I MAY be able to convince him to paint the other wall behind the couchâ¦
Updates: in the following pictures you will see I added Pussy Willows, Coral colored pillows, Cream and Brown pillows. Also, I have included pictures of the rest of the room to get a better idea of the layout.
Still hate: The sparseness but I also hate clutter.
How I saved money: I couldn't find cream pillows ANYWHERE except Crate and Barrel. And trust me - I looked at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Target, Cost Plus, Pottery Barn, Ikea, etc. I am sure there are tons out there now that I have given up. The Crate and Barrel pillow was WAY too expensive so I bought two pillow covers on ebay for the price of a half a pillow at C&B! I stuffed them with the existing stuffing from my old couch pillows. AND I re-used the coral pillows that were sitting in my bedroom. My husband is happy to have saved the money.
Still to do: New coffee table. Thinking of two smaller side by side tables to add texture. Add a coral colored something to the top of the bookshelf. I still have some money left in my budget for select items â so more bang for the buck ideas? Add more teal and coral accents - maybe to the pussy willow wall? Change out the picture of the orange flower to something with more brown, coral and maybe chartruese â but still using the existing frame. I want something bolder, maybe even a graphic pattern. I am picturing the beehive designs of Jonathan Adler. I can paint it myself too but need a good idea.! Any links to good accent pieces or art prints would be much appreciated! I have searched art.com etc. but havenât found what I want yet.
Here are the new pics:

colleen: thanks for sharing the update! I love how you took advantage of your space -- I usually don't even care for accent walls, but it's really, really working in your room, especially in your most recent after pics.
