Rebecca sent us an email: "I absolutely LOVE the custom made bookcase in "House Tour: Shannon and Emmett's From Factory to Family" post. I would love to find a place in Chicago to source repurposed lumber for my own bookcase. Does anyone have any great ideas where i could find a few planks?"(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.

American Barn Company

I know they've been written about on this site many times. My office has also used them on a project and they were fantastic.
Habitat for Humanity's Restore has lots of old housewares and leftover building supplies
American Barn is IN Chicago- near Wrigley Field.
Another great source is Bruce Horigan- who sells Urban Timber Wood- wood from trees felled within the Urban Forest- and kiln dries it to a proper moisture content.
I wrote about his company on my blog.

and, my favorite supplier of Industrial reclaimed Timbers-
is in Sycamore, Il- close to Dekalb-
J.M. Hoffman Company
630.215.7930 m.
John salvages wood from pre-Industrial buildings- beams range in size- and can be resawn given his huge bandsaw.
A wonderful find.
Im not sure about Chicago, but Id bet it has a recycled construction store like the one in Pgh. That one is called construction junction.
these are all excellent ... thank you! i cant wait to dive in.
strange though, www.americanbarncompany.com seems to be offline. have they gone OOB?
When we were building our bookshelves, my husband wandered past a construction site that was taking down its scaffolding. Having been taken aback by the prices I was coming up with for this type of aged lumber, he offered the guys $10 for a few boards. Presto. He cleaned them up and I've got my nice, sturdy, weathered bookshelves.
The Shelves are beautiful. I would love to replicate. does anyone know how. I know they are pipe pieces. Please!! Post if you know, am dying to give this a try!
