Name: Dominic Albanese, owner of Metropolis Modern Location: Gold Coast, Chicago Size: One bedroom Years lived in: 1 >> Enter Slideshow >> See All Thumbnails Sometimes it's just a good email day - we had one earlier this year, when Dominic got in touch offering to share his apartment with AT: Chicago. His one bedroom is in a 1920's building in the Gold Coast and has all of the beautiful vintage details that add so much style to a space, such as coffered ceilings and graceful archways. He is the owner of Metropolis Modern, which explains his eye for design AND for spotting a bargain - his home was done on an extreme budget. Jump below for all the (thrifty!) details... >> Enter Slideshow >> See All Thumbnails The apartment's style is simple, urban, masculine and just a touch traditional. It's an elegant look, but Dominic managed to pull off the decor on an admirable budget. He says, I bought the apartment last year, then painted it and furnished it...I purchased every single item (including dishes and wine glasses) through either Craigslist, eBay or nearby thrift stores along with Ralph Lauren bathtowels and Calvin Klein bedding from Filene's. I did the whole apartment for under $3,000, which was the original price of the living room's custom made sectional sofa with Mohair upholstery--I paid $650 for it. >> Enter Slideshow >> See All Thumbnails My style: Modern Traditional The Inspiration: Ralph Lauren’s modern room settings, Thomas O’Brien at Aero Studios Favorite Element: Wood Biggest Challenge: Carpeting What Friends Say: They like the sectional and the neutral color scheme Biggest Embarrassment: The bathroom vanity—I haven’t gotten around to replacing it Proudest DIY: Painting the coffee table Biggest Indulgence: The sectional sofa which was custom made and covered in Mohair; it also opens into a full size bed. Best advice: First figure out the color palette, then select the “big” anchor pieces for each room; sofa, bed, etc., and design around those pieces. Dream source: Ralph Lauren >> Enter Slideshow >> See All Thumbnails Resources: Craigslist eBay The White Elephant and Salvation Army thrift stores Various antique malls on North Broadway Filene’s and TJ Maxx for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren bedding and bath towels.
