apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

A Modern Assisted Living Facility in Copenhagen

We recently stumbled across the portfolio of Copenhagen's Lungaard & Tranberg Architects, and we were especially intrigued by an assisted living facility they designed just outside the city. Lundehaven is an apartment complex for elderly people, where both interiors and exteriors are designed with clean-lined, modern forms—a very different look than were used to seeing in American nursing homes...

When we ran some Danish text from Lunderhaven's site through Google Translator, their slogan came out as "a good place to work, live, and die." Not sure if there's a flaw in the translation or if Danes are just more frank than we're used to, but it does look like a nice environment to spend your twilight years. In addition to residential rooms and a communal cafe, Lunderhaven has a number of support and therapy services, as well as a central courtyard. Cedar planks line the facades, and large windows overlook the courtyard and other gardens.

This is nice to see posted. It is a big part of my business I supply materials to specifiers to make senior assist homes a better place to live.

Most US facilities are nothing but clean lines and all too modern. This one looks different because it's two stories and brick and wood, as opposed to plastic.

Still too modern for me. S'pose I wouldn't have a choice if I was dying.

The translation is correct. And the slogan is a bit frank, even for a Dane ;-)
