2006-05-25-whiteatticlogo.pngThe White Attic in Andersonville is on to something: Reinventing antique and vintage furniture into something original and new. More than expert antiquers, owners Terry Ledford and Doug Stucky hand pick every piece in their store, looking specifically for furniture in need of re-creation. 052506whiteattic1.jpg
To do this, they combine modern color and style with the vintage backbones of each piece.

Ledford himself handpaints the furniture, sometimes in bold contrasting colors in unexpected places (like edged detailing or inside drawers). The results are ultra-original and in a category that extends beyond "shabby chic," we think.

This is truly a neighborhood spot, as we learned from a Chicago Home web article: 052506whiteattic2.jpg"...Most of the pieces actually come from Andersonville: Ledford acquires many of the vintage pieces from nearby Brownstone Antiques, rewires lamps at Cas Hardware, uses a neighborhood woodcutter, and picks up supplies at Thybony Wallcoverings."

Read more about Ledford's White Attic in a 2005 Chicago Home magazine article. The website presents two collections, but it's recommended that if you see something you must have, you should call the store to make sure they've still got it (don't forget that each piece is one-of-a-kind). 052506whiteattic3.jpg

My wife and I absolutely love Terry's store. The furniture is very unique, well restored and painted and he's one of the more accomodating and personable shop owners we've ever encountered. And the prices are really pretty reasonable considering what you'd pay for a new piece at a Room & Board or C&B. If you want pieces that will stand out and not look like you just picked it off the show room floor, make a trip to White Attic.

I live in the Rogers Park area and on Saturdays my favorite thing to do is walk over to Andersonville and browsing at White Attic is always a highlight. The shop has such a nice warm atmosphere and the owner is the perfect shopkeeper, always accomodating and is just as happy to talk to you about the shop even if you don't buy. In fact I did after stalking his shop for the entire summer, I bought one of White Attic's large bureaus. It is sleek and modern with clean lines but the matt black finish gives it a warm look and touch. I love it. It's beautiful. It defines my room and gives me the necessary organizing space. Can't say enough great things about this shop.
