Heather's Bungalow Kitchen Update

040808kitchen4.jpgOur kitchen has come a long way in the last two months. We still have a long list of things to do, but the good news is we are now cooking regularly on our $99 South Bend six-burner range (yay, Craigslist!), and have a fully functioning sink (IKEA) and stocked fridge (a Jenn-Air floor sample from Abt). After knocking down a partial wall, pulling up nasty linoleum and tearing out wall tiles, we are thoroughly enjoying the results of our hard work:

Besides the fridge, flooring, and stove, everything else is IKEA. We are very tired of heading out to Schaumburg and dealing with pick-ups and returns, but so far we are really happy with the products: base cabinets, tall standing cabinets with shelves and drawers (serves as our pantry), wall cabinets with black glass fronts, wood countertops and sink.

Here's what is left to do:

  • attach front panel to dishwasher

  • attach side panels to our tall standing IKEA cabinets

  • replace trim around one window

  • replace the window blinds (eventually)

  • finish stripping the spice cabinet door and trim and reattach

  • insert a "grill" in the gap between partial countertop and wall (we needed to keep the space open so the floor heater would not be completely blocked)

  • tile the wall behind the sink/stove/counter (we are thinking about black & white hexagonal tiles in a simple pattern)

  • install a range hood

Dude, HOW did you get that stove for $99? It is awesome. A monster, but awesome.

Um, I second that. $99?!?! Wow. I've found some great deals in my life, but that takes the cake.

Looks lovely. I'm particularly pleased that you managed not to die from all the lethal airborne germs that were menacing your coffee pot during its short adventure in the bathroom. ;)

Southbends will last forever.

Just be careful if you have any kiddies. Commercial units like that are not insulated so the outside of the stove will be hot to the touch.

I love the contrast of the earthy floor/walls/countertops with the white cabinets.

yeah, i had to post just to say that i am quite impressed with your stove steal!!

i guess there's no possibility that your fridge could live somewhere else, huh? it just seems so awkward there...

love the cork floors!

thanks guys. goodnightdean, i WISH there was another option for the fridge. the kitchen layout is a bit strange and narrow, and that really is the only spot for the fridge. we'll live with it : )

as for the stove, some guy just wanted so badly for someone to take it out of his apartment. we happily did. it is pretty amazing. (thanks, Art, for the heat warning! we've noticed)

Heather --

Love what you've done. the appliances are amazing. I am about to buy a house that needs a full kitchen makeover. How easy was it to put together those IKEA cabinets? Also, do you love the sink? We were looking to get the same one.

Also, this may be a dumb question, but does the Cork flooring absorb liquids? my main concern with that in the kitchen is if something spills it'll end up getting sucked up by cork the way it work when you use cork for a coaster.

I have the same cork floor that Heather does. After you put it down, you seal it with a water based urethane. Mine is a year old and still just great.

the shelf above the stove top ... is that also by chance a vent for the range?

Hear Hear on the Yellowtail.

I am always amazed at how observant this crowd is.

Love the floor!

how about those globe lights? where are those from?

bkb:
the globe lights are Thomas Lighting pendants. You can find similar styles all over. Hang with caution!

natalie1215: we love the sink. its "farmer's" depth isn't for everyone but we love it. If you really need a sprayer you'll have to get an all in one with the faucet as there's no built in place to install one. Putting together the IKEA cabinets was pretty easy once we got the hang of it.

As for the cork, it comes pre-sealed but as Francesca says you should seal it again to make sure the cracks and grooves are covered and moisture doesn't seep in that way. We are slacking and have yet to do that.

Yellowtail?! Cut me some slack. All my money is going towards this dang kitchen. : )

Boy, you've really done a lot in a small space. I really like the apron front sink. Did you have to reconfigure the base cabinet to make it work?
