The Thing Quarterly: A Mail Order Art Project

7-30-07thethingquarterly.jpg

The next year of your life will be different.

This quote from Miranda July's website caught our eye and had us hooked on The Thing, a mail-order art project.

Sign up for a $120 subscription, and you'll receive four artist-made objects over the course of a year. Miranda July made the first object, and Anne Walsh, Kota Ezawa and Trish Donnelly made the other three.

Each of these artists designed a household object that incorporates text, but you won't know what it is until it ships.

It's an affordable way to start an art collection, if you're brave enough to leave the choices up to editors Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan.

Sounds a clever project, still I think if one wants to build up an art collection, leaving the choice of what should be in it to strangers isn't the right thing to do. Just my opinion, anyway.

I love the surprising and delightful artistic output of Miranda July, so I subscribed to The Thing.

I disagree with you, giorgia, about what is the "right thing to do" regarding art -- I think part of the art in this project is the delicious anticipation, trust, and refreshment.

Next month I'll let you know what my first Thing turns out to be, if you're interested.

LolaDanger - as I said, that was just my opinion. I also said that the project concept is clever, or better, an interesting one, I can see people subscribing to that. Still, it's not my thing, as to me building up an art collection also involves people finding art pieces by themselves - I love the thought of being involved in the process of creating the collection.
