AT On: The Benefits of Hiring Movers

5-5-08movers1.jpg

After weeks of seemingly endless packing, we've finally moved in to our new apartment. We're happy (and a little surprised) to say that the move went really well. Despite stressing over whether or not we'd get everything done, we were organized on moving day, and our wonderful movers from Joey's made everything run smoothly...

This is the first time we've hired movers for our home, and Joey's was worth every penny we spent. (For pricing, see Heather's review in our AT:Chicago services guide.)

A few of the key benefits of hiring movers:
• They finished the job in just a few hours. It would've taken us at least a whole day.
• They were organized, read the labels on our boxes, and kept things in order.
• We didn't have to call in help from friends.
• In the future, we won't have to return the favor by helping friends with their moves.
• No pulled muscles, achy backs, or emotional breakdowns.

Thanks to everyone who gave encouragement in the comments of our packing post. To those who've moved this month: we hope things went as smoothly as possible! To those who are preparing for a move: best of luck!

Agree, if you can afford it movers are money so very well spent. Now when friends "help" move all they have to do is assemble any new ikea furniture while i grill everyone dinner.

I just moved with a one-year-old toddler and believe me, professional movers are worth every penny. I used Delancey Street Movers, which has been written up on AT in the past. Can't say enough good things about them. Courteous, careful and fast.

I'd just like to say thanks for these posts about moving. My boyfriend and I move on May 31st and all of the tips and lists you've provided (both in the original posts and in the comments) have been invaluable. This is already feeling like the smoothest move I've gone through (smoother than the time I moved to from one apartment to another, about a block away from each other, on a Vermont country road!)

As a Military Brat and ex-USAF - I've probably moved 2 dozen times, and I didn't use movers only 2-3 times when I had no money and very little to move...

...now that I'm older and have accumulated more, I'll never again move without professional help.

I remember feeling so very adult when I hired movers for the first time back in 2000 (I moved from Rogers Park to Edgewater). Now, two moves later (including relocating to NYC), I cannot imagine schlepping all of my crap from one place to the next. My last movers (Rainbow Movers) hauled all of my stuff up to my fifth floor walk up in an unbelievably short period of time... It was so worth the money.

I moved out of a 4th floor walk up to another state. Worth every penny!

I hired Joey's Movers because of previous recommendations on ApartmentTherapy. I had a horrific experience. Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. They were rude, didn't read the labels on the boxes and damaged some items. I think the people commenting to recommend them must be employed by the company!

I will never, ever (barring unforeseen financial circumstances) move myself again! I completely agree. People I know have scoffed at the cost, but it's honestly worth it. I was moved in in a matter of 2-3 hours (including the 40 min drive) and had the rest of the day to organize the apartment, eat, and do all those things that I never got to do in the same day when I moved myself. I also refuse to help other people move (again, these are people who can afford to hire movers...but are too cheap).
