Remember this light and bright apartment from our 2009 Smallest Coolest contest? The September 09 issue of Canadian Architect magazine recently profiled its owner, Bernard, who works as a Heritage Architect for the Saskatchewan government. The story gives the scoop on how he renovated his historic apartment to meet Canada's guidelines for the conservation of historic places...

Bernard used salvaged materials, including reclaimed Douglas Fir, to restore the 95-year-old apartment to its former glory while updating it with modern amenities like stainless steel appliances and a marble backsplash. The article also mentions his "whimsical display of mid-century modern chairs" hung on the wall, a detail that we also noticed and loved.

Congrats, Bernard!

I don’t get the whole hanging-a-chair-on-the-wall thing. Someone needs to kill that trend.

Rick -- I was going to say the same thing, it makes me slightly nauseous

This was my favourite place -- still wish it had won (hanging chair notwithstanding)

Rick, I'm in agreement with you. Also, not all that crazy about the chairs blocking the fireplace...it looks odd.

The hanging chair is weird, but I always love to look at different uses of small spaces.
