Philips Digital Photo Display

110606photodisplay.jpg Digital frames, especially set for slide shows, really are a great idea for showcasing all those photos that might otherwise remain hidden in your computer for only you to see. This digital photo display from Philips seems to be one of the top framing choices right now (we keep spotting it in various magazines).

While the Philips website lists features and specifications for both the 7" and 9" frames, we can't seem to find prices anywhere. Any buyers out there know the price points?

What are AT readers' take on this product? Must-have digital accessory or just a nice idea for gifting?

I love the idea of a wi-fi enabled digital frame (bye bye memory card and bulkier form), and I'm hoping prices dip close to the $100 range one day soon. Right now, the Philips' 7" frame is about $179 on Amazon:

Is it just me or do these just really seem to sum up the idea of excessiveness?

Christy: point taken. Most electronics in fact are really a purchase into the concept of excess (i.e. the ubiquitous cell phone...the whole concept we need to be able to be reached all of the time, anywhere is the very notion of ridiculous). But I also think this could be a pretty keen product to give to your grandparents or parents, with photos loaded of their favourite memories. Some of these new frames can be setup to go through online photo collections automatically via wi-fi connection...a neat option for those with loved ones who live in different cities/countries, especially with the changeover from film to digital photo files.

My former boss has a couple of digital photo frames. They're alright. Most of the time, he doesn't keep them plugged in though, so they just sit there blank.
Also, unless you have one that runs on batteries, it has to stay plugged in all day, so if you're into conserving energy, this might not be the product for you.

Gregory - I totally understand. I mean, I own an iPod. Do I really need it? Not at all. I guess I just think of myself getting one and I would be to embarrassed just because of my own personally excessiveness. But, as you said, for a grandparent or someone who would really appreciate it, it could be really cool.

I think its my own guilty conscience speaking. :)

I too am waiting for the prices to drop on wifi enabled ones. I would love to have a few of these hanging in my hall, cycling through various photos I have. Right now I have the photos printed, but it would be so neat to simply have revolving slideshows. I'd like to tie the power for the frames into a motion sensor so that they would "come alive" while people walked in the hall.
