Best of Three: Chicago House Tours
Email from 8.27.08

8-26-tiptip.jpg

Before I tip you into these three remarkable house tours, that also happen to have been absolute hits with our readers, I want to put in a good word for the latest edition of ID magazine, which I had the pleasure of reading from cover to cover last night. It continues to be intelligent, beautifully photographed, innovative and feisty. Check out BMW's Gina skin car, TAF Design, and Julie Lasky's diatribe against internet publications on page 16. She's dead on. The only problem is you can't read it, because it's not yet online. But it IS worth buying...

5-7-cb23.gifHello, house and home junkies. We ran this world premier video from CB2 yesterday, and so many people viewed it that we had bandwidth issues and some complained. We've fixed them, and you can check it out today and avoid work for at least another four minutes....

LILLBERG Sofa at IKEA

12-6-lill1.jpg

Looking around at sofas, we recently came across this one, The Lillberg, and felt that it was in the offing as another IKEA classic. Designed by Nike Karlsson, the sofa is part of a complete set of seating, including a rocker, sofa bed, armchair and sofa. While we worry about durability, we see Ikea hacks galore to spruce this baby up with paint and pillow covers...

Got Color? The Movie

Connect with Color. This weekend we put together a small promotional film in NYC for our Fall Colors Contest. It's called Got Color? and stars The Blind Cotton Theater Company, with special help from Mzungu Kichaa Productions. Enjoy, pass it on and connect with color!

WHOA! I'm Your COO!

9-7-washington.jpgEveryone who works for AT was a reader first. It is with this in mind that we are putting up this post and copy catting our favorite ice cream company (see 1994).

The time has come to find a really good, smart, fanatic person who is capable of joining our staff here at AT and helping to run operations and all that business-y stuff for the years ahead. Is this you? If so, read on...

Pardon Us While We...

8-13-car.jpgWe're working under the hood this weekend. Please excuse us while Mark has been shifting our entire publishing system this weekend to a new server. Although you won't notice any great changes on Monday, everything should load far quicker, and it lays the foundation for everything we're adding in the next eight weeks, including a new search function this week. Yee-Haw!

AT on: Commenters and Banning

7-17-ostacism.jpgThis is a tough subject. As a school teacher for seven years I learned to have faith in community and also to believe in the necessity for discipline in order to preserve community. Tempermentally I tend to be lenient, but I find I get less so each year. Quick, decisive discipline coupled with the availability of forgiveness is now my model.

Which is all to say that much as we hate to do it (and by we I mean the gaggle of us who now make up AT), we've had to ban two readers in the past week, and we want to be very clear about how and why...

House Tour: Amys Retro Ravenswood Apartment

2-16-heather1.jpg

In the five years Amy has lived in her 500 square foot one-bedroom apartment (in a pre-war courtyard construction in Chicagos north side Ravenswood neighborhood), she has managed to keep collecting and displaying without succumbing to clutter. Shes got framed photographs and personal art forming a backdrop for family heirlooms and retro furniture. Most of Amys things were scored at swap meets and flea markets outside the city.

Amys utilitarian kitchen is full of built-in display cabinets and shelves, saving enough room for a large kitchen table ready for dining with guests. The glass cabinet doors give visitors an envious glimpse at her coolly coordinated dishware (all from flea markets and antique shops, of course).
