Thoughtful Baby Gift Idea: The Announcement

2006-09-07-card.jpgLet's say a friend is about to become a parent. An appreciated idea for your baby gift could be to take care of the announcement.

It always feels like such a big chore to expect of new parents - they've just welcomed a new person into the family, are not getting a lot of sleep, have someone to care for every minute - and now, let's have them pull together a big mailing at the same time!

It could be a fun outing several weeks prior to the baby's homecoming. Go shopping together (even online!) for an announcement they love, have the parents give you their mailing list (well before the baby's arrival, when they have a bit more time/focus) and then you are set. Once the baby arrives (either is born or the adoption process complete), kick into high gear. Get the stats on to the cards, print the labels and you're off to the post office. You will be the hero of the homecoming - well, at least a helpful friend.

The announcement above is from the artnoose Etsy shop. Style shown is available in poppy orange, jadeite green and blossom pink cardstock. The letterpress cards with envelopes are 24 for $10.

What a terrific idea. My kid is getting close to three years of age, and I still haven't gotten around to sending out birth announcements. (Everyone got thank you cards for baby gifts and has received two Xmas cards since her birth, so I figure they know she exists!)

Fab idea! I would go further and add that it would be great to also send out a quick email to friends and relatives with basic stats and info initially (people are dying to know!), followed by a mailed announcement later. I've made some really cute baby announcements using graphics from vintage baby announcement cards.

We just celebrated the birth of our baby boy, and I was able to create and order our announcements online at tinyprints dot com. It was SO easy. I made them during the first sleepless week at 3 in the morning and had them to work at home to send out in sleepless week #2. I loved the preview function etc. Some of the locally designed annoucements were SO expensive and would take forever to receive. Full disclosure: I don't know anyone at the company, get nothing for mentioning them etc. I'm just so pleased with the results of ours that I thought I should share!

Most stationery shops will provide the envelopes ahead of time, so you can address them before the baby comes. I've doen that for both my kids and it was a terrific sanity saver!
