7 Ways to Add Color to the Bathroom

12-1-08bathroom.jpg

We have a white bathroom that we love, but we've been considering ways to add a little bit of color without detracting from the crispness of our blank canvas. When we found this bathroom on the website of British publication Easy Living Magazine, we were struck by how colorful this all-white space became through the addition of just a few key pieces. Dissecting the image, we came up with some easy ways to add color to our own blank bathroom...

  • The key to this bright, graphic look is to keep all accents in the same color family.
  • Our favorite detail is the teardrop pattern, created using paint stencils.
  • Bathmats and towels in a bold hue add color and texture.
  • A small, mossy green cabinet creates extra storage space.
  • Plastic stools or chairs are both colorful and waterproof.
  • Containers and bottles in the same color appear as a cohesive collection.
  • Using the same hue in different patterns (teardrops, stripes, and solids) keeps the bathroom from being boring.

Easy Living Magazine provides a full list of sources for this bathroom, as well as 4 other jewel-toned rooms to inspire you.

This is really smart, because if you find you've picked a trendy color and gotten tired of it, it's easy to start over.

I wish i had a lovely white bathroom to play with, but I have one with old ugly tiles from the 80s with beige/brown tiles so I try to balance out the ugliness with clean white.

Although in my kitchen (with the same ugly tiles) I've added red as an accent with towels, pictures and a painted shelves.

I especially like this idea for people who rent and cannot change the bones of a bathroom.

Good point, Lisa Hunter.

I think this looks wonderful. Our bathroom, unfortunately, is way too small to hold up a look like this. someday, I'll get a chance to make a beautiful bathroom... another thing to do when I own!

I have been trying to get get basically this same look in my bathroom (although, of course, I do not have a fireplace in mine....). I really like the mostly white with shades of green though.

I whole-heartedly agree with K T G. Accessorizing the bathroom can go a long way. Of course, ensuring that all accents remain within the same color family is key. There are a number of bathroom sets out there complete with shower curtain, accent rugs, lotion pumps, tumblers, soap dishes, toothbrush holders, tissue boxes, waste baskets, towel sets and more - and many at very affordable prices.

We recently started a home decor & accessories related blog, Beautiful Home Accessories - if you get a chance to stop by, feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Suz
