Washrooms at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin commissioned a different artist to custom design the tiles and fixtures in each of their washrooms. Remember, this is Kohler, king of vitreous china, we're talking about here, so we're sure the artists had many resources at their disposal to enable realization of their wild designs.

The designs range from chic in the East Women's Room by Merrill Mason to playful in the Family Washroom by Brooklyn artist Carter Kustera...

The top photo and one below show our favorite of all the washrooms. It's the highly patterned, heavily textured Atrium Women's Room by Cynthia Consentino:

We're also liking the densely-patterned blue and white of Ann Agee's East Men's Room:

They make my head hurt. I like serene plain bathrooms. But the idea is interesting...

I've been there. Not what you'd want in your home bathroom, but great fun in a museum.

Go see the Kohler Design Center showroom while you're there.

The Design Center showroom is amazing. So is the Ann Sacks tile store.

I did some freelance corsetry design a few years ago and find the first picture hilarious. Creative bathrooms rock.

I visited the Kohler Art Center last year and the bathrooms really are wonderful. So are their exhibits--they have amazing shows.

If you go to sheboygan, eat a brat at the charcoal inn. Yum.

... oh, and about the exhibitionistic toilets in the first photo: I'm thinking they took the pic before adding stalls and seats to capture the tiles' full effect. Maybe.

I've been there! The bathrooms are really amazing in person. And yes, there are stalls with actual walls and doors - that was likely a "just painted" photo.

oh they're so wonderful! i would absolutely have one of these in my house. it would make dropping the kids off at the pool a lot more enjoyable.
