apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

White on White Bedding

In the middle of a month dedicated to color, we thought we'd take a breather and focus, just for a minute, on the lack of it...

It may not be the most practical option since you've got to keep your sheets and blankets extra clean, but white bedding can be very serene and spa-like. It works for stark contemporary decor, country style, or a warm modern look. Its versatility also extends to the way you style it, whether you like the European look of an uncovered duvet on the bed or the retro American style of a coverlet layered with blankets underneath.

A few current options are shown above:
1 Fulton Matelasse from Unison
2 IKEA Bedding
3 Cottage Hill Quilt by Ralph Lauren
4 Area Rain White Bed Set
5 Barbara Barry Peaceful Petals Collection

So European.
Always remember to wash at low temperatures so that the whites don't go gray too quickly ...

I love having white bedding! It's a little harder to keep them clean, but stick them in the washer and they'er like brand new!

I'll occasionally use a little bit of bleach to get them extra white- not something I could ever do with colored sheets :)

OH god, I'm so afraid of whites, but love their summery crispness. I have Martha Stewart's Trousseau collection and feel decadent everytime I dove in bed.

EAM, thanks for the tip on washing. My sheets were getting dullish and now I know why!

It's lovely...until the cat takes a nap there! (Unless of course you have a white cat!) ;-)

I mostly have all white sheets, duvet covers and shams.

My dog sleeps with me so I change and wash my bedding every 4-5 days. I use a combination of Borax The 20 Minute Mule Team with a sulfate free laundry detergent, never do I use bleach. The borax keeps them really white and soft with no harsh chemicals. Plus you can use the Borax to clean the house.

Lately I have been craving pale ice pink sheets!

itsamandal - curious too. I went to Ikea to look for a inexpensive white quilt to throw over a chair that is pending to be reupholstered and never saw that one pictured. I ended up getting the white shabby chic quilt from target white I now use on my bed.

What's the name of the digital white clock next to the first picture? It's great and I've been looking for an alarm clock. Does anyone know?

LL Bean's pima percales are terrific old-fashioned crisp cotton sheets - I use Iron-Out instead of bleach to keep them bright white (I find the rusty northeast water turns whites dingy, and bleach won't do anything to reverse that)

The IKEA shot is the opening shot if you click their bedrooms link at the top of the US site page. It's obviously new and IKEA is known for not photographing anything they don't sell. I'm sure your local ikean can help you if you take in the picture. Bon chance!

I use all white bedding precisely because I do have a toddler who sleeps with me more nights than not. Even if he spills something, the white will clean (or bleach) back to white far better than I could clean any color or pattern!
