Brilliant Beds

Necessity is often the best designer. We've seen some pretty amazing examples of beds made by hand, modified, altered, or even just brilliantly styled to suit the owner's needs. For five ideas, from a handmade loft to a headboard made from a door, click below...

  • Rajiv made his bed out of plumbing pipes, based on a project he saw on Instructables.com. To see the full tour of his home, click here.
  • Francesco's headboard is made from a door mounted to the wall. Click here for more photos.
  • Lindsay's combination of a slatted headboard with a Nelson bench is perfect. To see more of her home, click here.
  • This is a great idea for a guest room: two twin beds, pushed together, form a sectional sofa with DIY bolster cushions. For more information, click here.
  • Tony and Hilary built their loft bed above a storage pod in their studio apartment. Curtains close around the bed for privacy. Click here for more photos.

That pipe bed is pretty cool. Plus, you can get up in the morning and either swing around like a monkey or do pull-ups! ;0

I did the twin bed thing last year with my room. I live in a tiny one room apartment, so it really comes in handy when friends come over. As a sectional it seats so many people, and having a second bed for people who miss their last train home is great.

LOVE the first bed. The utilitarian simplicity is great...not surprising, given my ongoing love of plumbing pipe stair railings.

That pipe bed is quite stunning! I'm really into the vintage industrial thing right now, so that is right up my alley. Thanks for the inspiration!

Love the pipe bed. If you ran water through it, you could shower and sleep at the same time.

Wow, I really didn't even notice the two twin beds as sofas! I looked at the photo and thought "Where's the bed?"
