In the middle of a shaky economy, the modern rustic style seems to be picking up speed. Natural materials, simple forms, and a back-to-basics aesthetic provide a welcome sense of timelessness. For this post, we've taken the word "rustic" quite literally, looking at bedrooms that have a direct connection with the outdoors...
These bedrooms are drawn from a range of indoor/outdoor spaces: a canvas tent, a sleeping porch, a window-lined country home, and a barn conversion in England. The thread that ties them together is an emphasis on sunlight, a variety of natural textures, and views to the landscape. To get a similar look at home, stick with basic cotton bedding and minimal window treatments, such as sheer curtains or a Roman shade. A neutral palette makes a good backdrop for this style; bring in color with blankets and textiles.

Where can I get a chandelier like the one in the cosy attic bedroom shot? It's exactly what I've been looking for?

With the eception of the last one (which I adore), I'm not seeing the "modern" in these bedrooms at all.

i assume the 'modern' comes from the clean lines and neutral color palattes...plain 'rustic' would probably be more colorful and sentimental - i'm thinking quilts. anyone?

Well I only really see "clean lines and neutral color palattes" in the last picture, although I'll cede the second-to-last one as well (the rug and light fixture certainly count as modern). the first three pics just look very frilly and country to me.
