CHI Good Questions: Sources for Loft Beds?

2008-03-11-loft.jpgSteve sent us a question: "Hi. I'm new to apartmenttherapy.com I'm a recent graduate student who is about to purchase my first (humble) place. Given the square footage of my place, I think that I want to invest in a nice queen size loft bed. Can somebody recommend a carpenter or a place where I can purchase a nice looking loft bed? Is there somebody in Chicago that knows this answer?"

Congrats on the new place, Steve!

WoodenLofts.com came up in our research - in addition to selling to their own loft beds, they sell the plans, which might be a good way to go if you want to work with a local carpenter.

Can anyone help Steve with more specific sources to either purchase or have a loft bed built? Let him know in the comments....

I say go with the plans and find someone to build it. I don't know how you would find them but maybe talking to some people at hardware stores, they might have some regular handy customers.

One of my friend's at college had a roommate with a carpenter dad. Her loft was amazing. It was done in a really nice wood with bird's eye wood inlays. Beautiful.

Plus if you find a good carpenter you can get pretty much anything you need made. My dad is a pretty good wood worker, so I'm having some bedside tables made up. I found ones I liked to William Sonoma, but they were too large and $800 each, so he's making them up for a fraction of the cost.

I'm looking to build a modern loft similar to this on HGTV: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_design_small_space/article/0,1793,HGTV_3382_4831656_06,00.html

I'm having a hard time finding someone to build this as well but i drew a picture and posted it on craigslist.

hm. i´d go for the ikea-option (which is not queen sized, i know - maybe mod it?), but after that: its carpenter time...or-find a colleague/friend/relative/etc who is really capable of building such a beast.

good luck!

http://www.handicoinc.com/

I used them for a washer/dryer installation project at my home and they were fast, courteous and did a great job.

Hi there. I have a loft bed in my apartment. It's a double bed size, it is from IKEA and was pretty inexpensive.

I saw one recently that was made of painted PVC pipe. Interesting way to do it. Heavy but very strong. Simple to do yourself. All the edges are already rounded too.

if you plan on sharing your loft bed with anyone, have it built.

IKEA loft beds are only meant for one person and feel a bit scary, in my opinion (i had the metal one and i only kept it for about 6 months. it just felt too "college").
