We have Mad Men fever, it's true. How could you not be in love with the gorgeous set and decor shown on AMC's drama? One of the pieces that always catches our eye is Don and Betty's button-tufted frosty blue velvet headboard. We found a few pieces which seem as though they would feel right at home in the Draper residence.
Urban Outfitter's Dauphine Headboard, $325, features button-tufted velvet in a sleek rectangular shape. A more streamlined version of Betty & Don's headboard, it gives a nice nod to the headboards of yesterday with a great modern aesthetic.

On the higher end is Restoration Hardware's Peyton Upholstered Bed $1350 - $2695, which is cushioned from head to toe and available in a myriad of colors and fabrics, and of course, a button-tufted headboard.
Now if only we could order a Don Draper to go with either of these.
i am watching mad men RIGHT NOW..ha

Oh, so drool-worthy. (The headboards are nice, too.)

I am so glad that you're highlighting their bedroom. I love that headboard and I love Mad Men. Lol at Alex!

This bed is the closest I've ever found, and it comes in yummy colors... but it could be a roll of the dice regarding quality.

We are total Mad Men fans. DW's got Sunday night planned out for TV dinner in front of the set for the season opener. I hope they can maintain the standard of quality and attention to detail set in season one.

I'd take the man in an ikea malm bed with broken slats!
Actually, if I had that man in my bed, perhaps a padded upholstered headboard would be appropriate . . . .

I'm right in the middle of Season 1 right now. Salvatore is my favorite. No, the office vamp. No, the ad boys getting into a brawl at the office...

The issue for me as pretty as this is is the hygiene factor. Especially tufted headboard = dust, holds odor and just cannot be cleaned.

LoriSF, it's so funny you say that. My husband had this exact headboard when we were dating and it grossed me out for those very reasons. It had been his grandmother's, and his brother really wanted it as well so I talked my husband into letting him have it. BOY you should have seen the dirty look he shot me the first time he saw this scene in Mad Men! It was like, "I owned the coolest thing in the entire world that just became even cooler and you made me give it away."
As an aside, my husband also told me that they used old Sears catalogs as style guides for the show.

That headboard would actually be very easy to imitate. And you really save a lot of dough when you do it yourself opposed to buying one. I made mine out of an old cheap curved headboard someone had tossed. Slapped some padding and batting on it and stapled some nice fabric on it and it looks like a million bucks. Then if it gets dirty or if you tire of it toss it and cover it with something else. I can't imagine it getting dirtier than say an upholstered couch or chair which would be exposed to more dirt than a headboard, though.

Rubbing baking soda in and then using a vaccuum attachment occasionally should be fine for cleaning. And come on, it's no dirtier than your couch, your mattress, your armchairs, your rugs...probably less! And if you're spending a lot of time in contact with your headboard, you should probably get more pillows.

Never saw the show. But I going to see if Netflix have the first season in stock.

Anyone have the Dauphine headboard? I'm really thinking about it as an inexpensive way to spruce up my bedroom, but am concerned about how cheap it will really look in real life!

Clubfurniture.com just launched their version of Don and Betty Draper's bed and it's an almost exact replica of the button tufted headboard on Mad Men. Have a look and judge for yourself...
