Modern Four Poster Beds

2-4-08fourposter1.jpg

The four poster bed is back. Originally hung with curtains to keep out drafts and insects, four poster beds no longer serve the same purpose as they once did, but their height and presence has kept them popular over the years. They're a dramatic choice for the bedroom, which made them seem incompatible with modern decor for a while. Recent designs have scaled back from the ornate carvings of antique models. Top Image: The In Heaven Bed from Suite New York is simple and beautiful.

Our favorite: 1950s Four-Poster Bed by Tommi Parzinger on 1stdibs (price on request). We love the Mid-C lines of this piece.

This Wilshire Canopy Bed from Lifestyle Solutions is a platform bed with a canopy.

The Portica Full Canopy Bed from Room & Board ($1,199) has a sleek metal frame.

The Petite Silhouette Canopy Bed from Brocade Home ($499 - $599) is a contemporary take on the antique, ornate bed. The canopy is minimal, but the frame is fancy.

The Indie Bed from CB2 ($449 - $599) has earned both positive and negative reviews on AT.

The Hanna Bed from Habitat Ireland is 1,200 Euros. It's not available in the US, but we wanted to show it for its innovative design and styling (we love those lights).

A budget option is the Hemnes Bed from IKEA, $299. We love the yellow wood.

The Campaign Canopy Bed from Charles P. Rogers ($999 - $1,699) looks like a set piece from Out of Africa.

The Italian Campaign Canopy Bed from Anthropologie ($1,250 - $1,898) has clean, curved lines that join in a circular canopy at the top.

What's the point of having a four-poster bed if you aren't going to put curtains around it?

I * love* the Anthropolgie canopy bed...but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford it.

I loved the yellow wood too....until I got it home.

It's a very matte, dull, pukey color with greenish knots. It wasn't terrible, but it doesn't look anything like that photo. I almost decided to paint it the sunny glossy yellow that it appears to be, but decided against it and returned it.

It was sad.

Thank you soooo much for this post! I love four poster canopy beds, but I also have a very modern design ethic. I've been looking for a modern four poster for ages! My current favorite is the Stafford Bed at Crate and Barrel.

The two most important things for me are; quality of materials (I hate particle/fiber board and plywood), and sleekness of the design. I'm totally loving all the beds here (except for the first...).

Sydney, Pottery Barn teen has a bed that is very similar to the Anthropologie bed and is only $799 -- it's not available in a king size, but if you want a smaller bed, it's a fantastic cheaper option.

There has long been a stainless steel four-poster bed at Macy's/Marshall Fields on State street that I've wanted for my bedroom ever since I moved to Chicago. Unfortunately, I move just often enough that I've never thought this a viable choice.
