When many of you need something for home, we know you like to be self-sufficient. "Just make it": a common AT sentiment. Next up for what's the Best of Chicago, we're asking for your nominations of the top places for DIY resources: tools, paint, fabric, building supplies, etc. Where do you go to do it yourself?
And the nominees are...

Herman Miller Factory Store
Ace Hardware
Herman Miller Factory Store? ? ?
Seriously, though nobody wants to write it: Home Depot.
But for real treasures folk should check out Tom Thumb in Evanston...now that place is fantastic!
I second Home Depot. Although its a terrible evil empire mega store they have everything (almost literally) & the sales people are very helpful.
where is this Herman Miller Factory Store? i need an Aeron, but have an Ikea/OfficeMax budget. crap. Home Depot is good, there used to be a huge Ace Hardware on Elston but that closed up shop around a year ago.
Herman Miller Factory Store? Chris, what? where? please let us know....
I'll add that I like Sappanos for paint, Vogue for fabrics and Pearl for art supplies.
Ok here is the info..
The Herman Miller Factory Store is in Zeeland Michigan, home of HM. It can be very hit or miss. Fabrics seem to be about $3-5 yard, tables can be a great deal and I bought my Aeron for cheap. Your not going to find the classics. Great staff, funky hours.

For Fabric:
Vogue Fabrics
Crate and Barrel Outlet
For Paint:
Thybony, friendly locally owned spot. Their wallpaper is a little fussy pants but the paint selection is good and they have all the painting gadgets you could possible want.
