Best Sources for Vintage Furniture
Chicago

vintagefurniturebest081108.jpg Buying vintage furniture is a great way to go - it's a greener choice, the quality of older pieces is often superior, the retro style will definitely make your space more unique than when furnished with only new items and the prices can (sometimes!) be more reasonable. With all of that in mind, we decided it was high time to round up ten favorite spots to for vintage in Chicago. Jump below for the list and photos:

Of course, every list we put together is ever-changing and we hope these ten are just the start - we'd love to hear your favorites in the comments below. What shops and sources would you add to the list?

And if you want fine finds to re-do yourself, try Brownstone Antiques and Collectibles in Andersonville, diagonally across from Scout and White Attic. I purchased a load last summer and have re-done almost all the chairs. They were very reasonable.

Nice start, but most of these choices are on the pricey side, doncha think?

One of the best spots on the northside for vintage pieces has to be Edgewater Antique Mall on Broadway (half block south of Devon). Prices are a bit more reasonable (dealers are willing to negotiate) and there's a large, interesting selection of furniture, art and collectible crap. Broadway Antique Mall, 3 blocks south on Broadway is another good spot but it's also kinda overpriced.

For apartment therapy readers in Australia, my favourite vintage store is Vampt Vintage Design in Sydney - Elizabeth Street - check out their website

I love Praha on Lincoln Ave. They have a nice mix of vonyage (usually Czech!) and new and the owners are lovely.

Praha's been featured before:

I like Patina a lot, and their prices are pretty reasonable. Edgewater Antique Mall can be pretty good too, but their selection can be hit and miss.

I'll have to try Patina - never been there. I was just at the Ravenswood Antique Mart (on Damen, south of Lawrence) and do NOT recommend them: some nice pieces, but their prices are insanely high.

I want to add a new shop to your list!! Make sure you check out this fantastic new store for vintage modern!
UBER MODERN has been open for 6 months and is already getting rave reviews! Located at 2256 West Grand Avenue, it is in the heart of the "New Modern Design District", as stated by Chicago Social Magazine. They carry a bit of everything...furniture, lighting, pottery, glassware and jewelry. You can check out a sampling of their products by visiting their website at www.ubermodern.com.
